The citizenship test involves a test checking for basic understanding of English, both written and oral ... if they don't pass that test, they won't become citizens ... so why we have to issue voting cards and instructions in several languages beats me .... only citizens are allowed to vote ... and to become a citizen you have to have at least basic English .... ??

If we follow Dar's advice, the line for citizenship would become miles long. I have some wealthy Brazilians as neighbors and though they immigrated legally, they have yet to master the English language.

generally, (some exceptions to shorten length like marriage)..you can only apply for citizenship 5 years after you have received your permanent resident status which usually takes years.in itself....if by then ,you haven't learned English...when are you ever going to learn it?..Yes everyone should have to speak English for citizenship and to vote...it is what unifies a very diverse nation

The idea is that people coming to live here are supposed to be trying to join our society. If by the time they can take the citizenship test they can't speak English, they have to wait until they can. The can't very well be trying to join our society if they can't even communicate with most of us.
