I still don't see what certifying a breeder would do. The breeder is still selling to a pet store. If they really wanted to prevent puppy mills, they would make it illegal for pet stores to sell puppies and kittens from any source. Pet stores are not a good place to purchase pets in this day and age. I don't care if it's a hamster, rat, rabbit or dog. Go in and ask a customer service person at a pet store a simple question like what is the gestation of a rat, they cannot tell you. They ae not educated in the pets that they sell. So the shelters and rescues in Toronto Canada breed pets? Sounds like there's part of the problem. Shelters and rescues should not be breeding pets period... Shelters and rescues breeding pets should not even be implied in the law. This makes the shelter and rescue as unethical as the breeders that they are trying to regulate. My question is who's going to pay for all of this? *The thing that got me the most is that they are certifying shelters and rescues as "reputable breeders". Shelters and rescues should not be breeding. In fact, I'm surprised that the shelters and rescues are allowing that type of language to be used in relationship to this issue. They should not be lumped under the breeder reference at all. Personally, I feel that shelter pets should not be sold by pet store staff. Most pet store staff have no idea about the pets that they do sell. Shelter animals can be sold through pet stores but not by the pet store. This means that the pet store can offer the shelter space to display the pets but the shelter staff would be available to answer questions and to screen potential owners. This is done often in the US the PetCc and PetsMart chains.

I don't think its fair to say that you shouldn't buy pets at a pet shop. There are many more reputable shops then there are the private citizens out there. I will however agree that stories like this make me sick. It is my feeling that the person or persons responsible for this sickening act should be caught and nailed to the wall those poor pets didn't ask to be mistreated and deserve Justus for having been wronged

How very sad. . .

We found our cats at a farm, our water turtle trapped in the trap of a swimming pool and our bax turtle on the side of the road with a broken leg. I would never go to a pet store when there are plenty of needy animals just around the corner.

Disgusting. I hope the people responsible burn for what they've done.

It says that no charges have been pressed? Why?
