I applied for a UK transit visa, and was issued a different kind of visa. Anyone have any advice on how to get this corrected? I need to also find out how long it takes for the British embassy in the U.S. to correct this

It really depends on what visa was issued.

If you applied for a Transit Visa, and got a VIsitor Visa, then you are ok, since a Visitor Visa allows you to both Transit (make a short stop on the way to another country) and Visit (stop and explore the country).

The second important thing to check right now is the Expiry Date of the visa that was issued. If it expires after your travel date, you are ok. If before, then definitely contact the Embassy/Consulate to get this corrected before you leave.

What visa were you issued? Almost any kind of visa is valid for transit, so why change it? Perhaps the consular officer gave you the best visa you were qualified for, knowing that it was valid for transit. That's what I would have done when I issued visas.

Ask them. There are no UK visa expert or authority here.
