The Bible tells us Not to have any "Image" of him. He was Jewish, so we know that he didn't look like the pictures that are partrayed. I have an Aunt, who is a Devout Christian, and years ago, she removed the Picture from the wall. When we think of Him, we are to Love Him, in our Hearts and Not have a certain Image of Him, in our Minds.

I love that ppl ask questions about Jesus, you are such a sweetie, why would anyone get angry lol. I agree with you, I think old artists found an image they liked and just stuck with it. The only thing we know about Jesus appearance was that He was very plain, his beauty came from within. They pry gave him long hair because haircuts were not as popular back then, and in the area he was born into, brown hair and tanned skin was common.

The pictures you see of Jesus are artists renderings based on their interpretation of word of mouth accounts of how Jesus looked over the years.
I tend to think that Jesus' pictures have been altered a bit over the years to reflect the culture in which he is betrayed. For instance, I have seen pictures of a blue-eyed Jesus. I do not for one moment think that Jesus was blue-eyed, because no one from that region is blue eyed. I also tend to think that Jesus has black hair.
The white gown (cloak) is a way of setting Jesus apart from the others. I have a feeling, though, that Jesus wore whatever cloak was common back in those days.
I guess we'll know when we finally meet Him in Heaven. Until then, we'll just have to imagine.

He was Jewish so He probably wasn't blonde haired with blue eyes. His beard is long because back then they didn't really have barber shops. He was probably wearing a white gown because He lived near a desert and probably didn't want to wear dark colors that would absorb heat. Anyway, just my thought of why He might be pictured like that but really nobody knows exactly what He looked like.

I think (and I'm not 100% sure about this) that it's probably because we picture Him clean and perfect. The white robe in a dusty city would be amazing and being pure/perfect/clean etc...it just makes a good symbol. The brown hair & beard is probably because He was Jewish. The beard would have shown that He was a man (not a child).
I wouldn't get angry about this question. It seems like you are really interested in it. It's a good one.

the Bible doesn't tell us what Jesus looked like, nor do we have any paintings or other images from His time that portray Him. Later artists often tried to imagine what He must have looked like (either as a baby or as an adult), but they are simply that—the product of the artist's imagination.
Jesus, however, must have been a person who drew people to Himself, both by His righteousness and by His compassion. When people looked in His face they must have sensed God's love—and also Jesus' divine authority. When some of His enemies tried to get Him to contradict Himself or say something wrong, they eventually gave up in defeat, and we read that "from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions" (Matthew 22:46). Both His wisdom and His physical boldness must have confounded His opponents.
I suspect one reason the Bible doesn't tell us what Jesus looked like is because if it did, some might try to manufacture idols of Him, and people would end up worshiping them instead of Christ. But that would be wrong, for the Bible is clear: "You shall not make for yourself an idol" (Exodus 20:4).
Although we don't know what Jesus looked like, we do know who He was—and that's the important thing. He was God in human flesh, sent from heaven to save us from our sins. Does Christ live in your heart? If not, give your life to Him today.

the answer has to do with western art. From the early middle ages jesus has been protrayed likes this so people would recognize him in religous art. By the same token.,mary is pcitured in the blue drape- its a standardized art form. As to what he really looked like, we know he was a first century jew and that at the cross, as the guards gambled for his clothes, they cast lots for his robe which was made all in one piece- the artists paint it white.

haha ya know that's an excellent question. I think the white robe thing came from the bible. There are several times where it states that Christ was wearing a white robe that "shone like the sun" or something like that (I'm a baby Christian myself, so I'm trying to remember what I've been learning lately. hehe)
As far as his appearance? Hm... My guess is that it was written down somewhere when he came to someone in a vision... I'm not sure, but now I'm all curious. :)

There isn't really any credible proof that Jesus even existed, much less what he looked like. However, considering that he was semitic, we can assume that said character's skin was brown, his hair was black...and that it was short as was the custom for rabbis during this period. Also, he would be married as it was common for rabbis to marry at that time. As for dress, his clothing would probably look the same as everyone else's; white wasn't that common an apparel choice at that time.

I don't think Jesus looked like that. And he wasn't a blue-eyed white guy either. Look what part of the world He was born into. But, these pictures respresent our image of Him, and have become tradition.
