For a long term problem there are a lot of recommendations.. For short term well:-
Try a light dinner( soups and fruit salads) after a good work out in the evening.
Take a hot shower and go to bed with a study book in hand( bigger the better!!) you'll fall asleep!
By the way you could even try having a glass of hot milk before you sleep![(;)]
Hope it helps!Bye

I have that problem also...in the worst case senario. Several things where keeping me awake at night...and fatigued in the day.
1. Sleep Apnea. I know alot of people are down on this dianoses but when my wife has to shake me awake (when I did manage to sleep) in order to make me start breathing again...then you realize this condition is for real.
2. Slow Tyroid. You might think this would make you lazy and sleepy during the day...and it does, therefore, no sleep at night.
3. Low Tosterone. If you are a man the simptoms can be nearly the same as Slow Tyroid.
4. High Blood Pressure. You can`t sleep because your heart is pounding away or fluttering.
When I first went to the doctor, the nurse checked my blood pressure and it was way high, so doc put my on high blood pressure medication. The problem did not go away so he added another medication. I started passing out when it got to hot or sometimes just standing up. I was still not getting any sleep at night. He had blood drawn and checked for slow tyroid and it was low so he started me on synthroid. I was still not able to sleep at night and was tired during the day so he tried every anti-depressent in the book and nothing worked...some even cause more problems. He sheduled me for a sleep clinic after my wife told on me about not breathing at night. After two adjustments on my CPAP I was sleeping better but still tired during the day. My wife had read article about low tostesrone and asked the doc to have me checked for that...it was low. My wife gets to stick me in *** with a needle every three weeks now. On top of all that I was still very unmotivated and lazy. Doc told me he wanted to send me to a shrink and I fought it for a long time. Finally went, took the normal battery of phycho test and found out what I already knew...not depressed but something was causing me problems.
My wife...she reads alot...read an srticle about an experimental drug that was given to pilots in Iraq to keep them alert for extended missions. This drug acts almost like an amphetimine without the buzzy nerveous feeling...it is called modafinil. So I stay alert and active during the day and sleep well at night.
...and if this don`t help, take the advice of the other poster and...drink yerself to sleep.

If it's a chronic problem, some things you should try are reducing your caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco use, only using your bed/bedroom for sleep (and sex if you are sexually active), and sleeping 8 hours a night at the same time of night whether weekday or weekend.
