Don't. Get a gymnastics coach to instruct you. I had a friend try a self taught back flip and did a major face plant which required some surgery to fix.

Practice off of a diving board, first.

The same muscles used to do leg lifts are the ones that will carry you over in a back flip.

Do a series of quick leg lifts, but modify the movement to tuck your knees up in the air. Make sure that the legs get lifted, not the head or shoulders. Do these in quick jerks. You want sprinter's muscles, not weight lifter's muscles.

You may not need to strengthen these muscles, much, but practice the movement.

Then stand at the end of the board, facing back. Lift your arms while standing on tip toe, drop your arms and pussh down on the board to gain some spring. Using the spring to help, straighten the legs while raising your arms. Spring UP, and a little back and then kick your legs in the air, like the modified leg lift. You might even grab your knees to tighten up the tuck.

The movement should carry you up and rotate you around. The great thing about a back flip is that you will see the water coming around, so you will know when to come out of the tuck.

You may over rotate, you may under rotate, but splashing into water is a lot less painful than splatting onto the ground. Do a few more to gain some confidence.

When you get the movement down, and are ready to do it on dry land, practice it on a gym mat, or, at least, on a thick lawn. You won't get the spring of the diving board. All the spring will have to be from your legs and arms.

I taught myself on a diving board at my apartment pool a couple summers ago.

Stand on the board, back to the water, jump up and slightly back. Kick your feet over your head and then the most important part I found was, concentrate on planting your feet on the water.

You will fail many times and do some back flops, but with practice you'll eventually get it.
