does anybody else think that racial profiling is the best way to reduce the threat of terror attacks? it is the most logical thing to do at a time like this, screw political correctness

it's not the best way. but it is gonna happen. this is how i see it. i'm mexican (sort of). i was born here in the US, my mom was born in the US, my dad was born in the US, my grandma was born in the US. If i get pulled over because i look mexican, so be it. you know why? because i am not doing anything wrong! i have no reason to be upset, no reason to be agitated. I have nothing illegal on me, i'm not doing anything wrong. I know i can show my license and insurance and registration and i can't get a ticket for it. i can get pulled aside on the street by a police office because he can't get me on anything. now the atitude of the police officer is a different story. (mostly used for intimidation, not usually because he's an a$$) so, if my name is mohammed ahmed, why the sam hell would i be surprised if someone did a cavity search on me????? if i was given a hard time at the airport?

Worst possible way.

Completely ignore the fact that it's illegal and unconstitutional. We've already determined that the laws or the constitution don't matter to huge numbers of people, so we'll ignore them for this question.

Racial profiling focuses attention on one particular group of people, who fit a set of visibly obvious criteria. And while all that time, effort and attention is being focused there, that means it isn't being applied anywhere else.

The best way to ensure that we're hit by another terrorist attack is to tell all the would-be terrorists exactly what we're looking for and exactly where we'll be focusing our attention. Because that just creates blind spots where we're not paying as close attention. I guarantee you, whatever criteria we focus on, the next real threat will look completely different.

The only way we can have any rational attempt at security is to keep the criteria so random and so unpredictable that nobody will know what the weak spots are. Anything as predictable as racial profiling is a recipe for disaster.

But if all you're concerned about is making other travelers feel safer, regardless of how much harm it will actual do to our security standards, and ignoring the illegality of it entirely, go right ahead.

{EDIT to nicolasraage} Here's one. I don't assume people are a threat just because of their religion or their race or their gender.

racial profiling sounds easy, but how do you do it? does that mean anyone that looks like an arab male between the ages of 25-45? that could target many other races as well. If you do it based on religion, how do you know what they are? There are so many muslims that look totally Aryan.

Racial profiling has a potential of being wrong. But we can not close our eyes and pretend that the majority terrorist aren't Muslim and that the good Muslims do not denounce the bad ones. Profiling won't get all of them but will put us closer to solving the problem.

racial profiling has never worked. The reason - we are a free society who does not condone this type of behavior in our police forces. This and most cops are just not that smart to differentiate between a Sikh and a Muslim

Im very, very sad to agree with you totally.
90% of all recently documented terrorists turn up to be Arab males between the ages of 15 and 30. It sticks in the craw but profiling is the only reasonable means to counter a cowardly enemy of this sort.

If we are trying to find a group of people represented mostly by a particular race, then absolutely.

Show me one middle eastern man (non terrorist) who does not think a middle eastern man is more likely to be carrying a bomb on a plane than an asian woman, and I will show you a liar.
