To cook the pasta use water, If you then are making a recipe that requires milk like macaroni and cheese you use milk. The box has directions on to tell you how long to cook pasta then drain but do not rinse. Then your recipe which ever one you are following weather from a book or box gives you step by step instructions. Now if I misunderstood your question, Please add more detail. Ty. Hope I have helped

I prefer to use milk and butter, after I've drained the macaroni first!

What are you making?
Boil water, out macaroni in, drain, then proceed with your recipe.
If no one else is home, maybe you should just wait to cook.

I use a rice or soy beverage. Technically, that would be water, and the added ingredients provide better texture and flavor.
