My mom and grandmom and step-granmom all make homemade bread and butter pickles. They are all from North Carolina. We always have them on the table for special occasions, like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've always assumed that they were eaten on bread with butter. But it could also mean that they were livlihood for some cultures at a time (Southern farmers like my family?) Good question!
