Dog's identify one another by SCENT, not by sight, and on their "butts", on either side of their anus, dogs have "anal glands" that secrete a scent specific to the individual dog. It's sort of like a chemical "calling card".

When puppies are born they can neither see or hear, so the only sense they have is smell. Thats how they find their mother to nurse. Dogs use their sense of smell to find out who the other dog is.

There is a scent gland in the anus that is like their signature scent. That's how they familiarize themselves and identify each other. It's like human's giving a handshake.
