Maxtor offers a free tool to check your hard disk with on http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=%2Fen_us%2FSupport%2FSoftware%20Downloads%2FAll%20Downloads&downloadID=22 . Download it, run the .exe which will write the actual program to a bootable floppy, boot from said floppy.

Caution: Read the documentation carefully first. The Maxtor tool interacts directly with the hardware. Choosing the wrong option(s) can lead to data loss.

Just run Scandisk in the System Tools section of Windows. It checks for bad sectors

Just use the windows "error checking" tool available under the properties of the harddrive that you want to check. It will offer a checkbox to try to scan for bad sectors.

You could try Norton disk doctor or diskkeeper 9.0. you could also just use the windows built in program for checking disks. To access the built-in feature just right click a partition and choose properties then click on the tools tab and select check now. that's all. hope this helps.

If you are running WinXP the built is chkdsk.

At the command line run chkdsk c: /f

This usually requires a reboot because it has to run in standalone mode.

Have fun and be safe.
