A doctor or the school will eventually give the child a test. You might remember the tests, there is a card with a bunch of dots on it, and in a different shade of the same color there is a number or letter spelled out by the dots. The doctor will ask your child what number they can see.

Detection and Diagnosis
Color vision deficiency is most commonly detected with special colored charts called the Ishihara Test Plates. On each plate is a number composed of colored dots. While holding the chart under good lighting, the patient is asked to identify the number. Once the color defect is identified, more detailed color vision tests may be performed.

You can take him to an eye doctor and request the test. There's probably also books available at your library. It's a colorful dots and number test.
My husband wasn't officially diagnosed as being color blind until he was 21 -- no one bothered to give him a test until one of his job physicals. He always knew he was -- although when he was little his mom just thought he was stupid. As he got older she began believing him.

There are charts with colored dots forming letters and numbers and if the child is color blind it cannot make out the figure.

you could hold a b&w picture on hand and a color on the other, the flashy the better, and see it gets the attention of the baby.
