i am a responsible owner of 2 female pugs, i spayed who is 10, and 1 in heat, at the end of her breeding dates according to our vet. she and the male are healthy and vet approved. we have tried to breed them 4 times in the last week. they connected multiple times, but he never did tie/lock on for more than appx 30 seconds. is it possible that she can still be pregnant? tried to call the vet, but he was not in today. just thought someone here with more experience might know. this is the first time we have tried to have her bred and we have done our homework. this is just something that i have no idea about, and i thought the actually had to tie on for several minutes. thanks.

Hi, I am breeder of American Cocker Spaniels. When I first started out, I questioned the same thing. What i have learned is this: A tie is a tie, it doesn't have to be a certain amount of time locked to work. As long as they had a successful tie is all that matters. Sometimes, I have dogs that are only locked for seconds and sometimes, with other dog combinations, they are tied for several minutes. A tie can be 30 seconds or 10 minutes and have the same effect. Just in case it worked - here is a website that i have found to be very helpful http://www.debbiejensen.com
Good Luck!

The female dog determines how long the "tie" will last; it's HER muscles that have to relax to release the male from the hold. Sometimes ties can last several minutes to an hour, but how long the tie lasts doesn't determine whether or not there is a transfer of semen. Breeding a dog multiple times is the best way to insure impregnation; so your dog may be pregnant.

By rights you have a chance for her to have pups but the chances are very slim. What you might try to do is when he gets her just hold them together for a cople of mins this will help.

If you are really good you could also do AI.

what was the problem?? was the female not letting herself, if not you should wait like a day or two since you already waited, its about 5-8 days after she starts heat. If they didnt tie(it should be for around 10-15 minutes) shes probably not pregnant. but you probably still have time...........Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

Yes she could be pregnant. Sometimes the ties are very quick and you still get puppies. (You really should not be breeding 4 times though because if all 4 times took you're going to have some premature puppies on your hands.)

I had this happen with a pair of Chihuahuas. I figured, no pups, but 9 weeks later, she had 4 babies, so yes, it can happen.
