The only thing God dissaproves of really, is that man, the creation, wants to be equal to the creator. When God is not the highest priority in your life, you, or your own desires are.
If God wanted mindless drones, he would have created more intelligent bees. God wants people who choose to love Him. This is not a one-way transaction, but a love that is reciprocated infinitely. Unfortunately, no-one who does not love God will ever understand this, but imagine if you will, eating, breathing, drinking love, being enveloped in it and suffused with the most complete and perfect love, acceptance, and peace. This is what God wants to give us, if only we choose to put Him first in our lives. I do not think that choosing this perfect love is being mindless, rather it is being mindful of the fact that no human, not even myself, can ever give me complete and perfect love.
How can I tell you that I love you without freaking you out? Because that is the other thing - people who love God, love other people without reservation, even their opponents.
I love you.
Peace,
Mindless drone????

I doubt I can give the answer you are looking for, but in one word the moral of the story is REDEMPTION.
It teaches that a holy God must be righteous and just. If you think about criminals of war - like the Nazis that were tried after WWII, if they had been judged guilty and then released with a verbal admonishment I think we would all have been outraged. Justice would not have been carried out. God is holy and he cannot maintain holiness without being just.
But the story of the fall has a second part that involves the love of God. Because he is a God of justice sin cannot go unpunished. Adam and Eve were sent from the garden with the promise of a redeemer. In the story God also provides clothing for Adam and Eve which further illustrates his caring love for them. The essence of God is love. He maintains justice but provides a means for reconciliation.
There now, you have my two cents. And now I must go and toil painfully to earn my bread by the sweat of my brow.

No, God is teaching us that we need him. Because we underwent evolution (burning sword), we are accelerating towards destruction and ultimate destruction of the Earth. Since we became independent of God, we now are running into pain and sorrow and the Earth is corrupt. With wisdom and knowledge (the tree and apple) comes responsibility, and by the looks of Earth today, we are not handling that responsibility very well.
You see how the animals are in balance and harmony when we don't mess with them, that is how humanity would be if we didn't chose free will. True human happiness comes from Submission to are Creator. But until that Day, he has gave all power on Earth to humans so we can see how incompetent we are.

As an atheist who studies and tries to behave in a way compliant with the Bible...
There are no morals to the story.
When my children were younger they were always playing out in the garden. I would drill in to them that it would be fine as long as they stayed well away from the water (because I didn't want them falling in and drowning, or destroying all my hard work) and didn't eat anything they found out there without checking with me first (there were wild berries which would have harmed them).
Is this turning my kids in to drones by denying them free will?
Good and loving parents understand that in order to protect our children we have to set clear rules, and they have to abide by them. The kids understand that they do have free will, but only within the parameters we set for them for their own good.
God explained to his children that they could do just about anything they liked in his garden, except for eating what He didn't want them eating.
I don't understand why people get so hot under the collar about this. I see only a metaphor for the way in which we should all describe limits to our children about what they can and can't do in life. It's no different to people driving on one particular side of the road because this is what the law tells them. But not many people rant about that and give it large about how it impinges on their personal freedom or free will, do they?
Free will can only reasonably exist within fixed parameters to ensure the welfare of everybody.

Adam & Eve reminds me of the Jack & Jill nursery rhyme
Jack & Jill went up the hill
to fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down & broke his crown
and Jill came tumbling after
Up Jack got and home he trot
as fast as he could caper
And went to bed to mend his head
with vinegar and brown paper
I think the moral is pretty much the same, simply to be careful.

The moral is God wanted humans to retain original innocence without knowing the difference between good and bad. But man decided to become extra-wise, in clear contradiction to His orders, deceived by the serpent. Hence the offspring of the serpent were cursed and so were the offspring of humans to remain perpetual enemies, till one killed the other, examples of which are replete, and you see by the day. Incidentally, have you read the bible, AND DONE THE THINGS AS SAID?

The moral is quite simple, if God tells you specifically not to do something, don't flippin do it. It's like minding your parents, they tell you not to run out into the street, don't run out into the street. That doesn't make anyone a mindless drone, you can ask why you can't run out into the street, but doing it anyway will get you hit by a car.

Simple, the law says not to cross on a red light cause you risk to be killed, the law says not to speed, you risked to get a ticket, the law says not to drink while you drive you could get jail time, your car taken away, and your liscence.
God's law was..do not eat of the forbidden fruit because the day you do so you will die.
So if you disobey a law...you pay the price.

You're evaluations are based upon a significant ignorance of God.
What you should get:
God created man in his image.
God loved man... a lot, enough to walk side-by-side with him in the evening.
God was betrayed by man when man listened to and obeyed satan over God.
God was angered and hurt by mans attempt to decieve him by hiding then lying.
God judged man for treason and satan for instigating.
God is the one who was wronged, not man.
I suggest you think on this for awhile.
