Yes, because it makes my day better and theirs, too. Everyone you now consider a friend was a stranger once.

Sometimes. I always thank people who serve me, even bus drivers. I wish I smiled more at strangers.

I always greet strangers with either a smile or a friendly "hello." It certainly does not hurt or cost anything to be nice to your fellow man (or woman.) Perhaps if everyone were a bit more outgoing we would live in a very friendly world. Also, in many European countries, everyone says hello or good morning to nearly everyone.

It depends on where I am. In my native New York City, smiling only gets me dirty looks in reply. In upstate New York everyone not only smiles, but they say "hello" and "good day" to strangers. Smaller towns are much more friendlier like that.

Yes. It's a gut reaction from working as a waitress in college. I smile at everyone I make eye contact with.

If they are performing a service for me (like handing me my coffee or lunch, yes).
If they look creepy - never!
If I don't have any business with them, never.
Sometimes I smile at a cute baby - they're adorable.

Yes! I grew up in Kentucky and we would always say Hi! to anyone we encountered. But now I live in Illinois outside of Chicago and if you say Hi! to everyone you see they look at you like your crazy!
