I think it is interesting (at http://www.tanach.org/breishit/vayish/vayishs1.htm):
"'Yisrael' serves as an alternative name for Yaakov, in contrast with Avraham which became a replacement (for Avram). [...]
To understand why specifically this name - Yisrael - was chosen, we must return to the first event when Yaakov received this name, i.e. after emerging victorious from his struggle with the "mal'ach." [...]
Up until this point, Yaakov's life was characterized by his need to employ trickery to acquire what was rightly his. During his life, Yaakov has become the expert at survival, but he lacked experience in 'frontal combat,' (...)
[...] the name 'Yisrael' reflects the character of one triumphant in battle. Yaakov's new name is significant for it reflects his capability to engage head on in battle. "

As many others have said, the Hebrew word means "wrestles with God." Today, there are three definitions of the word "Israel."
The State of Israel
The land, Israel
and the people, Israel

The land of "Israel" should be split in half. The northern half would be Palestine and the southern half Israel.
In the middle occupying Jerusalem would be the new U.N. HQ with a corridor that divides these lands from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. Stationed there should be 200,000 man Rapid Reaction Force capable of delivering a serious smack down to ANYONE in the region that acts out of line.
This solution creates peace in the region and gets the U.N. out of New York .

God gave man supremacy over all spiritual forces on earth. The extra-terrestrial thief has authority to steal anything God gives to us that we are careless with. God foreknew that the Judges would cause their spiritual authority to be stolen. He foreknew that the Levitical priests and the kings of Judah would also err. However, whenever all of his custodians erred corporately and alllowed the scepter of Judah to be taken, every surviving seed of the covenant would reap multiples of subjugation at the hands of all gentile nations and their seed. To counter that, God had Jacob, the parent seed heir, wrestle with a supernatural force. That victory was a transgenerational victory--bequeathed to every seed of Jacob who lives obediently. Since the tribe that lived in the hottest regions Judah, the blackest of all Hebrew Israelites were given special responsibility over military matters, they would suffer the most. Let us read the reference scripture: Genesis 32:28 - And he (the angel)said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Name"Spiritual Conqueror." I hope every black person who feels dejected gets a chance to read this and understand why the devil pursues them so ruthlessly--by the way--that is one of the occult world's most guarded secrets: .
Every occult organization and its sponsored armies must sow discord between alll of Abraham's seed. They must pursue their lands, their resources--mainly oil, their labour, and sow discord between the three flocks. Then by their secret oaths they must devalue their currencies. By the time that is accomplished, the seed of the former mightiest must be taught to feel worthless.
The remnant that survived the carnage of 70 C.E slipped across to Ethiopia--read Joel 3:6 - Also read Deuteronomy 28:68, Amos 9:7. Read the works of authors who have gone underground, cracked secret codes, used DNA analyses, vetted prophecies with history and risk their lives to bring you these literary gems: Parfitt, T: The Lost Tribes of Israel, The History of a Myth-- 2003. B. Hill "The Golden Fleece Found" www.trafford.com/04-2126. Boaz.

What's interesting is how many people on here get away with breaking so many rules on yahoo answers .that are clearly lined out in the terms of aggreement, and still get away with it. Solicitating other websites is one of those rules that keep getting broken on here as well as the prophanity, and constant offensive content that no one cares to do anything about.
The prophanity and offensive content statement was no reflection on this post.

I enjoy reading these reactions that articles like this get from the religious fanatics. You can really get them stirred up.
When all their ranting and raving is over, they all show their true beliefs. Look at their responses, if they do anything but misquote their bible, quran or whatever, they speak of killing, stealing, abusing or mistreating others.
Somewhere I read that "Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you". Sound familiar?
Or how about this one "Thou shall not kill"....
Maybe before any bible thumpin born again christian or moslim or jew or whatever, opens their mouth to speak, they should look deep inside themselves and assure their words will express GOD's will and not their own sick little desires.

No, this is incorrect. Where did you get than nonesense definition? Israel means "he strives with God".
"Israel (ĭz'rēəl, ĭz'rāəl) [as understood by Hebrews,=he strives with God], according to the book of Genesis, name given to Jacob as eponymous ancestor of the Hebrews, the chosen people of God. In the story, Jacob finds himself struggling with a being who, by the end of the narrative, is sometimes taken to be revealed as God. The story highlights the theme of Jacob's conflict and alienation from people (Isaac, Laban, and Esau) and God. The struggle marks a critical stage in the psychological development of Jacob."

No, I didn't know that before. I thank you for the information. Although I am not a Jew, I love the name Israel ... even more Jerusalem. Both names have such a beautiful and mysterious inference.

According to Genesis 32:28, "And He (God) said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, Isreal; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed."
Liiterary it means "Prince with God."
If I had to guess this is one of the cases where it is difficult to translate from Hebrew to English.
