People always say that economic sanctions only hurt the people as in Iraq (pre-war), North Korea and the Congo. But as we've seen, the leaders of these countries spend most of their money on military and war equipment rather than trying to feed their people. Take North korea for example. Their people are starving, yet they don't seem to have any shortage of military equipment. The sad truth is that the United States probably cares more about the suffering in North Korea than Kim Jong Il. The U.S. and South Korea would love to see a unified Korea some day, but the North just doesn't have a clue. If these madman dictators gave up their pursuit of regional dominance, there would be more than enough money to help their own people -- even under U.N. sanctions.

You're kind of in a pickle when a dictator has total control over the country, when you cut off food and medicine and other goods to the country, most often the people suffer more than the leader and the military. So when you do sanctions against a country like North Korea, or Iraq, it can end up hurting the very people you actually want to become stronger, and having little affect on the actual enemy.

I think you have answered your own question. These dictators dont care about their people. So any money that comes in is diverted to what the ruling establishment wants and not what their people need. Take Iraq for example under the sanctions Saddam was not weakened a bit. He continued the grandeiouse life style he always had and spent even more on the military. The people of Iraq suffered tremendously due lack of food, medicine, jobs, ect. So the premise behind sanctioning a government is to make life miserbale so that they change their ways. This doesnt work on dictators who could care less if their people perish. So thats why people complain the idea seems reasonable but the practice of it seems to be ineffectual in most places.

If the USA gave up its pursuit of world dominance there would be enough money to help the poor people in america.
Economic sanctions against tyrants don't hurt them because they are in control of resources of their country.
Only the poor people suffer. The UN sanctions against Saddam Hussein killed half a million Iraqi children
