I wake up in the middle of the night and cannot move. I can barely open my eyes. I try to twitch my toes or move a finger and I can't. The only thing I can do is regulate my breathing. In order to get out of this state I have to go back to sleep and try to wake up fully all over again.

It creeps me out because I feel totally helpless. Then after a while I will get paranoid and feel as though I might be in danger.

Plus does this condition effect anesthesia? I might be going in for surgery and I don't want to wake up and be just as helpless. I am going to ask my doctor but I don't see him for 2 weeks and I want to get a head start on knowing now.

This happens to me every once in awhile -- I hate the feeling. It's usually caused by stress and it's called Sleep Paralysis.

I'm not sure what the condition would be called, however, you should disclose any information such as this to your doctor.
