Well great, glad u enjoyed your visit, but what you may not realize is that illegal immigration, primarily from Mexico, but from many countries has become a Problem in our country. Not saying that Mexicans are bad people, far from it, but the way that some things have developed has set the stage for lots of social problems, hence the discussion on the issue. It's a complex problem, mainly revolves around socioeconomic dysfunction in the source countries, but also includes some very muddled thinking on immigration enforcement, and the reason for all the confusion is the 'pity plays', and we ARE getting played politically on this one...it's really sad, too, because Mexico, our neighbor, has really kind of let their country fall apart, and now I guess we're supposed to fix it for them or something...talk about your negative return on investment....lots of money apparently down a black hole...and in return we get a lot of negative rhetoric, it's all pretty stupid.

I think that rather than rhetoric and mutual emnity, let's have the border fence instead. Then, when that's built, we can talk about what kind of assistance or whatever, but end the easy access to our country that's caused all these problems. Good fences make good neighbors...

Far too many people generalize. And not just about any one particular country or race or ethic group or religion.

It's a problem that I see more and more every day. Almost like a contagious mental defect that prevents people from looking at individuals or seeing distinctions between different situations.

I've observed this phenomenon actively for about 15 years now, and there's something in the brains of way too many people that cause them to assume that just because a few people do something, then everyone who shares some characteristic with them must also do the same thing, even if that characteristic is utterly unrelated to the behavior.

It's baffling to me why so many people are unable (or unwilling) to make distinctions, or see people or situations as unique and evaluate these subjects just on their own facts, without automatically assuming it's just like [whatever] else.

I have to say that your statement is a generalization. I am American, and I do not feel like I generalize in any negative way. If you were to read my answers, you would find that when I do generalize it is in a positive way. (I say things like Mexicans have a vibrant culture. This is a generalization, true, but it is not negative or degrading.)

I agree, there are a lot of questions and answers here that include horrible generalizations about Mexicans and other ethnicities, but there are also a lot of very negative generalizations made here about "whitey" (as at least one person put it) or Americans, etc. Can I ask, in Brazil, does no one generalize?

Aren't you generalising when you say you don't like the way Americans talk about Mexicans. Some Americans have nothing against Mexicans.

I don't generalize about Mexicans, I know too many of them to do that.

You are generalizing about Americans....

Many times, the people who ask the question use mexican in it, but i agree, many people do generalize, perhaps because they are our closest neighbor.

why do generalize Americans? it isn't very hospitable for one like you to say anyone is heartless for wanting children to stay with their parents as i did. i never sd separate a child from their parents. in fact, i sd they need to stay with their parents and go back with them to their country of origin. until their parents pass INS procedures or the child comes of age. you're welcome back anytime, please leave your ignorant hostility south of the border
