Cats (and dogs) live shorter lives than humans, so to convert human years to "cat years" you need to make the number bigger, that is multiply by seven. If someone says a cat is a certain age, they usually mean people years, so I would assume your friend's cat is 6 normal months old, or 42 cat months (3 and a half cat years). Ask your friend (or look yourself) if the cat is young - 6 months for a cat is still kittenish.

This is inaccurate. Our vet had a more accurate chart for cats and the equivalent in human years.
A six months old a cat is just reaching puberty. Cat Lady is right with her other numbers, most other people are wrong.
Even for a dog, the 7-year estimation is not accurate.
See if your vet can provide you with the chart I mentioned (it's actually a matrix).

A one year old cat is approximately equivalent to a sixteen year old. That makes her cat about 8 years old. A two year old cat is like 21.
I have a 22 yr old cat and she is the equivalent of a hundred year old human. And doing pretty well for her age, thank you.

Yep, its a matrix of some sort.
Last I heard it was 9x for 1-3 years,and then 7x afterward.
That matrix or this calculation is the closest
I know that 7x has been wrong for decades.
