I got my mattress and box spring back from a friend who needed one until she herself got one to get back on her feet. She raises cats and breeds them and the mattress got soiled. My cats pee on the spot nearly every other day. I sprayed and washed it but they still urinate. How can I get ride of the smell and stop my cats from urinating.

If you can't afford a new mattress, (people always assume that you can just run out and buy new things,) purchase a gallon or two of Natures Miracle at the pet store. Saturate the mattress with this and you'll have to let it dry for several days. Once that's done, do like another reader suggested, and purchase a waterproof mattress cover or at least a tarp to put under your washable mattress pad. Fbreeze won't cut it, and since pee is ammonia based, that won't work either. You need the enzyme that removes the odor and scent that will prevent the cats from resoiling that area. But, your friend should pitch in and help you now that she's back on her feet. As a matter of fact, seems to me that she should give you the newer mattress and boxspring and take back the peed up one she'd borrowed in the first place.

Because the pee was not from your cat(s) they are going to continue to urinate on that spot, because, they smell the other cat, and are marking their territory, therefore, they are going to continue to urinate on that spot. the mattress is always going to smell, you can't get it out, can urine is very potent, as I'm sure you know, and impossible to remove completly. However, you can try to weaken it by using a carpet cleaner machine and some animal odor removing soap. Go to a home improvement store, and they will know what you mean. Also, best solution...get a new mattress set (it will probably cost you the same to get the carpet cleaning machine). Then the cats will stop peeing there for good.

My cat kept peeing on my fav chair and I put alcohol on it. The smell went away and I had the cushion dry cleaned. Then I sprayed it with some stuff I got at a pet place. Its a smell that keeps cat off of things, they dont like the smell.
I also heard that ammonia does work, to clean everything, but have not tried it.
But yeah I would get a new mattress, if possible. That sucks Im sorry.
Good luck.

It may never come out. Now that your cats are going there too, they are developing a habit. You will likely need to retrain them. Here are a couple litterbox pointers...scoop at least once daily. Use unscented, clumping litter. Don't use those automated boxes. Make sure your cats' boxes are easily accessible and not near where they eat. Make sure you have one more box than you have cats (ex, 2 cats=3 boxes minimum). Completely change the litter and wash the box about once every 1-2 weeks. Your vet will likely have some more ideas on that aspect for you...don't assume they are going there because other cats did (unless you know cats did soil it at your friend's house). Cats will urinate in obvious spots because they are upset about a smell in the house or outside, because their box is dirty in their opinion, and because they are sick and are trying to get your attention. For the stain...I recommend nature's miracle for cats. It works really well at removing cat stains. Invest in a black light. If the stain can be seen with black light, there is still odor there that the cats will smell. Good luck!

I'd say you have two reasonable shots, lots of Natures Miracle or 2 gallons of white vinegar, leave it in bright sunlight and let it dry out. Then buy a good vinyl mattress cover that zips up. The same type they recommend for allergies.

Then wash all your linens including your bed pads in a strong bleach solution twice and if possible hang them to dry in the sun.

If that doesn't work, you need a new mattress and pad. And I'd buy a vinyl mattress cover for it just in case your cat has developed a bad habit!

Good luck, your friend really owes you one,,,

1. Clean the area with straight ammonia. Pour a little on the stain and let it air dry, keeping the cats away.

2. Go to your local department store (Kmart, WalMart, Kohl's, etc.) and by a mattress COVER, (NOT a pad, a cover). They sell for $10-$20, are made of vinyl, and encase the entire mattress in vinyl and then zip closed.

3. The ammonia should neutralize the smell, and the mattress cover (think zip case) will prevent any more damage.

4. If the cat still messes outside its litter box, it may have a bladder infection.

Good luck.

I had some urine smells in a mattress and nothing I tried worked. Mattresses are not expensive these days. I would just get a new one.

I think nothing is going to work, serious. You cannot wash the smell off the mattress (you would have to soak it for days) so that the cats will not be able to feel it.
You need a new mattress.

I've had this problem happen to me. Buy some Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution. Saturate your mattress with the product and let it dry on its own.

I've also been known to spray my mattress with Lysol disinfectant, on top of using the other product. Together it works.
