Cats shouldn't be let outdoors whatsoever. Contrary to popular belief it is far more dangerous and cruel. cars, sick people, kitty diseases, other animals (dogs, raccoons)..

IMO never and I realise that in a household with young children keeping the doors closed and monitoring the kitten's whereabouts is pretty impossible.

A one year old cat is the equivalent of a sixteen year old human. So a kitten is just a "toddler" in the sense that you would never allow them outside without supervision. A mother cat will train her kittens to know what to eat, where it is safe to go, and they will obey her and stay safely hidden from dangers until she returns to them with their food.

A kitten out on its own is just going to get into trouble. I picked up a four month old kitten who was hit twice by cars as I was behind in my car. The kitten of course was dead by the time I got him to a vet. Owners had put a flea collar on him! That has to be about the pits as far as human care is concerned.

You can train a kitten to a halter and leash and that can be fun. They must never be "tied" outside on a leash however as they can easily get strangled.

So if you are just not wanting to empty a litterbox I don't have much sympathy for you. It's just part of responsible cat care.

Never. As many others have explained, indoor cats live much healthier, long lives. The average life span of an outdoor cat is only a few years. That's because of disease, wild animals, dogs, cars and sick people who do horrendous things to them (among other things).

Would you put a baby outside to fend for itself?

Please give this and the other excellent answers some thought if you really care about your kitten.

A kitten should be a least 8 weeks old before it is taken from its mother. If you want to keep the kitten, it should never be let out on its own. It will wander off or be attacked by another animal.

I hope you have a very safe place for it to be out on it's own. I would allow it to be outside for a litle time , with supervision, at 2 months, but keep a close eye on her. I would let her out on her own at 6 months, but be there to let her back in when she wants. Don't let her out for the whole day , when you are not there and I would never let my cat out at night. Vets say indoor cats live longer, so my next cat will be an indoor cat.

At about 8 weeks they are weaned from the mother. Cats should never be allowed outside unsupervised. Ideally, they shouldn't go out at all...once they get used to going out with supervision, they want to go out all the time. Cats left outside kill wildlife, get in fights, contract disease, and get hit by cars. If you care about this kitten at all, don't let it out or find it a home where it can stay inside at all times.

You shouldn't let your cat out. If it's a kitten you should just keep it inside. Indoor cats are healthier. And if they don't get used to being outside they will be happier. There are lots of dangers outside for cats.

At least 8 weeks but 10 weeks would be better. Taking them away too early can cause behavioral issues and they need the mother's milk so they can be stronger and not have a lot of health problems when they get older.

by "out" do you mean "outside"??

kittens should NEVER go outside untill they are FULLY VACCINATED and SPAYED or NEUTERED and have proper identification and ideally you have a secure place to keep them (either a cat run or a fenced yard so cats cant get out)

lots of times your neighbours wont like your kitten in their yard and may "remove" it on their own - either legally taking it to the SPCA or illegally dumping it in the country...

indoor only cats live longer lives.. it is estimated the lifespan of a cat that goes out part of the time is average 2 years (vechicle deaths account for 60%)

6-8 weeks or when it can use the litterbox and has stoped nursing on its mama. It is unhealthy to pull a kitten away from its mama if the mama is still cleaning and loving it and if the kitten is still nursing. You see, over time the kitten will slowly not remember its mama even if they live together.
