It depends on what kind of workouts you do. All excersises will stutn growth to an extent (becasue you are in s sense weighing yourself down) though there are excersizes that do this more thatn others. Use common sense, weighted squates literally squish you down. Benchpressing is also known to stunt growth.

However, at 16, most people are already slowing down growth. So at most, you'll be like 3/4 of an inch below what you would have been, but you'll be stronger than you would too =)

It's absolutely 100% safe as long as you use good form and don't try to lift too much. The claims like stunting growth and causing metabolic/circulatory problems later in life are a crock. A word of warning, however: You may be tempted to use supplements to increase your size. Even though many of the supplements are safe (steroids ARE NOT SAFE) you should avoid them until you're at least 20 years old. Once you've stopped growing, you'll be OK to use stuff like creatine, glutamine, ZMA; whatever you think might boost your gains. But do yourself a favor and do the research on that stuff before you buy.

weightlifting absolutely can negatively affect your growth (notice i didn't say "stunt") if done too early and without regard for the differences between the adolescent and adult body, but "working out" is a good idea for everyone. working out doesn't have to be bench presses and back squats. sports are great for total body conditioning. if you're not into sports, bodyweight strength exercises and cardio (walking, running, swimming, hiking) are fairly safe if you're in good general health. like already mentioned, see a doc and get the ok, before you start swinging weights around, but don't be afraid to exercise. everyone needs it.

ps - incidentally, 16 is generally the age at which it is considered safe to start weight training.

I started working out when I was 16 but I was done growing by then. You really need to speak to a doctor about something like this. What I did was I went to my physician at that age and he OK'd me for that because I really was done growing. Thats what I suggest doing before hitting the weights. I'm sure your fine though.

It will not stunt growth.

A lot of people here are saying "Yes, but don't overdo it..."

DUH... NO ONE should overdo it. It doesn't have anything to do with your age. And overdoing it isn't as dangerous as people think - if you're overdoing it, your body will let you know.

If anything, old geezers should worry more about "overdoing it" than you should at 16. At 16, you're much more flexible and resilient than an older person.

Love, Jack.

Yeah, it's definitely a good thing to work out - at any age!
Just don't over do it. Work out to get toned and healthy,
not to look like some muscle bound monster! *lol*

Be sure to eat right, and stay hydrated! :)

It's good for you, provided you eat right and don't over do it. Remember, you're growing right now, so don't do anything to damage yourself.
