My boyfriend and I want to get a dog. I'd like a bichon sized dog but he wants something a larger one, something in between would be nice. We live in a townhouse with no yard, we'd have to take the dog for walks. Because we don't have a house we can't go too big. We want a dog with a calm disposition. His family has always had bouviers and my family has always had bichons so we need to find a nice medium sized breed. What would be a nice dog for us?

I have shelties and they are great for an apartment. Another idea would be a giant or sight hound breed. The giant breeds need just short bursts of intense exercise and then they sleep the rest of the time. I am looking into scottish deerhounds myself. The sight hounds are the same way - like the greyhound.
Another way to go would be with another herding breed - the corgi. The pembroke is the prankster and the cardigan is the calmer but they are both great dogs.

Basset Hound and Great Danes are both large dogs but they are very calm and great for people living in apartments, they only require a few walks outside a day and some heavy exercise about once or twice a week, like going to the park and playing frisbee or running.

The size of your house should have little to do with the size of your dog. My vet told me that Great Danes are great apt. dogs bc they are so laid back and lazy, and if you plan on walking it anyway, I would fret too much over size, MOST times the bigger the better. I would maybe get a golden if you have alot of time, they thrive when given los of time with their people and are pretty mellow inside. Mixed dogs are great too, and normally healthier. Check out your local animal shelter. Good luck

A female Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, or Female Bernese Mountain Dog make fine small home dogs. Females tend to hover around 85 pounds, are extremely well mannered around anyone, terrific with strangers and children, are loyal, attentive, and alert. They tend to want to be close to their masters, and are content to spend the day inside lounging. I've had several Greater Swisses along with Great Danes... I love them both, but the Swissies are my top choice.

You should consider a greyhound. They are called the worlds fastest couch potatoe because despite what people think, they are quiet lazy. Walks and a good run once or twice a week. They don't bark much. They don't have a doggy odor. They don't need a groomer. They are very laid back and sweet dogs.

The only kind of dog i would recommend that you not get is a husky. I know someone who owns 9 of them and they have a lot of energy and need a place to run. But something like a golden retriever or an australian shepard.

how about a bichon-bouvier mix?
i really don't know
labradors are really good dogs. i have a lab/golden mix who is a perfect angel.
whatever you get don't go with a pure bred. they always have interbreeding problems. and mutts are much smarter dogs

Get a Schnauzer they come in 3 formats. Miniature, Standard and Giant. I think the Standard one would fit your needs. They are great dogs. And they don't shed!!! Perfect for city dwellers!! :)

Whatever you do, please adopt from the pound or rescue organization. Even if you decide on a specific breed, you can find a local breed rescue and adopt a pure-bred that way.
