We are thinking of trying Hebrew this year. Have you used this program? Was it worth the money? What language did you learn? Do you recommend it?

I used Rosetta stone to learn Hebrew. Their main methodology of the program is 'learn by example'. Basically, you are looking at a picture and a foreign language interpretation of what's going on on the picture. There were a few (don't remember the exact number) chapters that consisted of 10 lessons each, and each one adhered to the above model. At the end, there were a couple of chapters of more complicated nature, they included long conversations and no pictures.

Overall, this program is good in my opinion only for beginners, but if you want to seriously learn the language, Rosetta Stone is not the way to go. Not everything can be learned by putting pictures next to words. There are no english translations, no grammar rules summary, or any other rules for that matter. Other good things about the program are speech practicing with microphone, virtual keyboard for words, and of course the fact that you can listen to speech.

I haven't used it myself but almost everyone I know who has is pretty bad at the language they studied (despite thinking they are fluent). It seems like a good extra supplement but you can probably find other good ones for 1/10 the price. I think finding a textbook for self study or a class that fits you works much better, as long as you mix it with some listening practice and whatever you can find on the internet. Learning a language shouldn't be THAT expensive. Put that money towards a plane ticket to Italy, it will serve you much better and be a lot more fun.

Egyptian hieroglyphs. It was written in greek, hieroglyph and demotic egyptian in 196BC so priests, government officials and pharoahs could read what it said. It was discovered by the french in 1799 and because Greek was already known, it was the key to understanding the other two languages.
