I'm a pacific islander/asian mix guy that eats the same thing. Actually it's just a way to prepare it before cooking. Some types of rice have a powder coating similar to talcum. It would kind of gross having that covering on the rice not washed away, and it affects the cooking. Not sure if other asian cultures do it, because there are types of rice that are not processed in that way.

I don't think it's a religious thing. Rice is just a common food in places like Trinidad, and you wash it to make sure it's clean before you eat it.

Probably not it is just rice. But cultures tend to come up with myths about their environment based on how they perceive things. It probably made those that eat rice healthier then ones that did not at one time and so the myth became a kind of fact. Many times too things that a mother would say to get their kids to eat would become a myth of sorts. Religion (from the sociological viewpoint) makes its followers use certain traditions to bring about conformity and cohesiveness in a group. This could be an example of that.

Rice is often washed (at least the good rice - not that Uncle Ben's "instant" stuff that tries to pass itself off as rice) to remove dust, excess hulls and some of the starch.

It means that you take the rice, put it under running water for a minute or so until the water runs clear - then you cook it.

Try it sometime and you will find that the rice actually tastes better, and is better for you.
