don't bother with flea collars. use Advantage or Frontline. you put the liquid beetween the cat's shoulderblades and it is effective within twenty four hours and lasts for about a month depending on the brand.
you might want to bathe the cat first though to make sure it isn't dry skin or anything. the cat shouldn't get wet after you put the stuff on for at least twenty four hours

Don't use a flea collar...they don't work and can make the cat sick. Just because she is scratching, that doesn't necessarily mean she has fleas. Unless you've actually seen the fleas, it could be just about anything...so she really should be seen by the vet. If you are certain it's fleas, do NOT buy anything from the store!!! Many of the OTC flea products don't work and are very dangerous to cats. Don't trust herbal treatments either...garlic can make cats really sick, as can many other substances that are safe for us. Plus, the most effective products (Frontline, Revolution, capstar, Program, etc) are only available thru the vet...if you see them elsewhere, they are likely not genuine. Go to the vet and see if you can get Capstar. It is a pill that quickly kills fleas. If you can't get a pill, see what you can get. The pill will not prevent fleas, but it will kill them. If the cat does have fleas, they are likely already in your carpet...get a flea treatment for your house while you're at the vet.

My cat had fleas so bad that she was scratching till she had big sores all over her.(She's black so it took me a little while to notice it was that bad! LOL!) I read up on all the products out there and I use that Feline Advantage, it kills the fleas because it is a nerve agent on them, and it also kills the FLEAS IN YOUR HOUSE. This is what they said it would do and it WORKED! I used it for three months to make sure and have been flea free for a long time now. Also this doesn't make your cat smell weird or make it all greasy. The cat still doesn't like it tho. LOL!!! It costs about 15.00 for the tube. If fleas are really bad, they have two sizes, one for I think 8 lb and UNDER and one for 14+ lb. Get the big tube whether your cat is big or little(not a kitten, just a small cat.LOL!!!) My cat is like 7 lbs and I used the big tube and they were gone fast! Hope this helps!! -SD :)

Flea liquid, the only you get from a vet, no longer the over-the-counter ones. Flea collars accomplish no longer something effectual and can be risky to the animal. Take it off the cat and get suited flea therapy for the cat too. i ended utilising flea collars many some years in the past, before there have been flea drops to apply, after looking that on my cat, below the collar, became right into a hoop of pink and weeping epidermis with each and every of the hair long previous. Dreadful issues. do no longer comprehend why all people buys them or why they are nevertheless bought.

It's better to use flea treatment like Frontline. I don't think flea collars work very well and they irritate the cat (cats slip them off all the time, too).
There is some kind of pill that the vet can give your cat that gets rid of fleas really fast (Capstar or something like that - I may be wrong), but I don't know much about it.
All of this may cost more than you want to spend on your sister's cat - maybe she will pay you back!

I would not use a flea collar. They don't work. First I would bath the cat with a strong flea shampoo and a day later I would put some type of flea repellent on it. Although, some people say that you shouldn't use the chemicals on the pets because it can poison them in the long run. So I believe there is a natural remedy to this problem. You put a little garlic or something on their food. Call Petsmart or a pet store near you about the safe way of fighting fleas. Good Luck!

Well, I imagine if your like me, you cant run out and spend 30-40 buck on frontline, even tho it works. There is a great topical equivalent called "Spot ON" flea control by the company Zodiac. It has good reviews if you want to look it up online. You can get it at Wal-Mart for 8.00. It will kill fleas, their eggs and actually stops the larva growth. Also if you are wondering about your house, they make some carpet deodorizer that has flea killer in it. Its only 3.50. Since you are just cat sitting, I assumed you wanted to save as many pennies as you could :) gl!
