I see you have written god with a lower-case g each time - that leads me to believe that you do not acknowledge THE God. People can (and do) make a god out of anything! Those are not the ONE TRUE GOD - He does exist, and He created you to be a free-moral agent which means He will not force you to serve, praise or worship Him. He loved you before you were even born and has a plan for your life. No, He won't strike you or anyone else with lightening bolts from Heaven for not wanting to know Him, nor will He "hunt down". However, when you pass from this life, your soul (which will live forever) will be judged by God and will receive your punishment for not serving Him. Keep in mind, God created Hell for one purpose - for the fallen angel Lucifer (Satan) and all his followers. He never intended any of humankind to go there. He DID create Heaven for his followers to spend eternity in. You've got an open invitation to join a host of happy people going! God Bless!

That is a really good point, and that's where moral sanity in Christianianity really needs to soak in.
But first, the terms like "you will be punished" arent equivalent to "God will hunt you down". Some of not most people say in in a way that gives you a warning of what they believe will happen to you after death. However, those that bluntly speak phrases like "you will burn for all that you do" would scare anyone into doing good, but that doesn't mean that they are doing any good either. In fact, it's no standard to set for other Christians to have the philosophy of "believe what I do or I/God will tear you apart". Not only does that give them a bad grace in their own beliefs, but, as you said, it wouldn't totally make God happy that the method they are using to warn people is all good and great.
But yes, your theory is very true for some, but the "you will be punished" does not mean that they are bad, but only if they use more graphic/violent termonology for it. And it's great that you question religion, but it seems like you antagonize the religion in general with "i find it funny about christians". I do understand that hypocrisy and contradiction ensnare the religion, but antagonizing what it stands for does not mean that its ok.
I hope i answered your question correctly
:)

We all make some errors in what we say, and words we use. If you don't believe in God than why are you so concern what us Christians say or do. We at least try, to help one another, and do God will, God knows we make mistakes. I hope you make it to Heaven, God surely wouldn't have to punish you if you end up in Hell... Satan would do that for the Joy of it..... at least with God He has compassion, and would let up after punishing, and it's not looked at in that sense, if He didn't punish when you done something wrong, that would mean that He didn't care, He does it for your own good, even tho- you may not see the whole picture.

Remember that a few Christians do not represent all. A lot of people take on the name of being Christian thinking it will make them a positive image. They forget that it isn't what they say, it's what they do! They can claim to be Christian, say I pray everyday, go to church, and like to point out all the flaws in people and claim that all they do is acceptable etc, etc.... But if you see them in the supermarket cursing out a lady for taking the last turkey, well there you go. They are just as flawed as anyone else. There is no way to be perfect in Gods eyes because as it states in the Bible, we are all born with sin. So, we sinned the day we popped out. And to go around telling people that you're going to hell for not believing. Well, they just did something against the Bible which makes them a hypocrite. You can't point out someone else's flaws when you haven't been the perfect person. Everyone sins whether they know it or not. So next time someone says that, remind them of what i said. You can't accuse someone else of being a sinner and condemn them, when you are just as bad for trying to condemn me. That is a sin in itself because only God can judge, and I don't think that's who you are.

Not all of us are like that. You were just talking to an idiot that can't see that some people just don't believe in God. However, God won't punish you because you are ignorant, it's whether or not you've led an honest and decent life. If you were talking to a child, they probably were told that in Religion class because they have to realize their dealing with the most powerful force imaginable. If it was an adult, maybe they were trying to scare you into converting to Christianity. Just don't go judging all of us by one moron who claims to be Christian. But if alot of us tell you that, it's merely passing along information to that who repeatedly reject God.

I don't personally believe that God does punish you for not believing in him because he gave you freewill. The biggest reason why I believe this is because God is supposed to be a loving and forgiving god so why would he punish someone for doubting. In the Bible it even talks about how Thomas was forgiven, Thomas was a deciple who is known by many as Doubting Thomas.

There are all kinds of people in areas of life that call themselves something and perhaps they are or perhaps they are not... I can tell you I am an artist... you don't really know do you?
until you see my creativity at work.
My understanding of the Christian teaching about punishment comes from a Bible scripture that states that at the end of life on earth there will be a great judgment day where everyone will stand before God, those who have believed on his son Jesus will enter into "heaven" those who did not believe in God or his son will be sent to "hell" where there will be weeping and Gnashing of teeth ( great regret) It also says that many people will come to him saying they believed, but because of the way they treated people in their life... he will say to them, " I never knew you!"
I bet those people will be very very surprised!

I never argue religious morality or (the fear of God) with an atheist for that very reason... Most of them will stoop to any down and dirty trick and say anything or use any foul scenario to bully their point for this very reason.
For a Christian to tell an atheist that if they don't believe that "They will be punished." is completely useless because they lack the religious fear of God that would cause something like that to be beneficial.
When a man is ready to hear, he will take it from anyone. When a man is ready to preach, he will be there when a man is ready to seek. Until then, why don't the both of you just stay the hell away from each other and save the rest of us from having to constantly listen to your immature need to beat each other up.
It's like telling a black cat, it's bad luck... It is pointless, Why bother if you're just yapping out scripture and getting nowhere?
I don't get you people, you are both equally as annoying and just as ignorant for even trying to convert one another.

USUALLY when a Christian is saying "you will be punished" they are saying it to TRY and be helpful (as if the threat of punishment will make you turn to God) this probably backfires more than it works but it is the way they were trained as children (don't be bad or you will be punished) so it the way the revert to as adults.

hey hun....sadly even though we may be Christians we are still human and the bible warns us against sudden anger for it will cause us to say ignorant things and even hurt our witness...and there are plenty of professed Christians out there who very well may not be....the Bible warns us that there will be false teachers and Christians so you have to watch out for them and not be led astray....i have to say im sorry if you have encountered some one that has said that to you because they are completely in the wrong and hurt a true Christians witness....i believe the best way to answer questions like this is to thoroughly study the bible on the topic and let God guide you as to whats you should say....that is the only way to give the most helpful and honest answer....love daisy
