It is probably akin to the Jewish tetragrammatron (YHWH, God's name spelt without vowels so as to be unpronouncable). The Jews felt that God's name was so sacred that they as mere mortals were unworthy of saying it so they spelt it so they couldn't say it. Similarly, the muslims may be intentionally mispronouncing muhammad's name because they feel as mere mortals, they are unworthy (or incapable) of saying it properly.
