Good question, a lot of those programs are taking up precious memory which you may not necessarily need and is likely slowing your computer down. If you want to reduce the startup follow these steps.

1) Once the computer has booted up, click on Start

2) From the Menu choose Run

3) This will bring up an open box type this in the box :
msconfig

Then click ok.

4) This will bring up the System Configuration Utility with bunch of
tabs , click on right most tab call startup

5) This will provide a list of all application that is started at startup
uncheck the application that you don't want in the startup. Don't uncheck scanreg

6) Finally when you have unchecked the applicatio you don't need click on Apply button

7) The system might ask it needs to reboot the computer for the changes to take effect click ok to that.

And Walla you are done!!! Hope this helps

That depends on the program. Some (esp. older ones) have a shortcut in the "Startup" Folder in your start menu, which if you remove, will not load that program. Others (like real player) have an icon in the "notification area" (next to the clock): try right clicking, and working with the menu or settings there. If there's something else, and it's insidious, try a spyware remover (there are other ways, eg by managing services / registry, but don't go that way unless you really know what you're doing) Cheers.

1. Go to Start> All Programs> Startup> and delete anything here that you don't want automatically starting.

2. Go to Start> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs> and remove any programs you don't need anymore

3. Work inside of the options of remaining programs and tell them not to run in your system tray or start automatically

It is fairly simple :

Follows these steps:

1. Go to Start > Run
2.Type MSCONFIG in the "Open" box (either enter on your keyboard or press the OK Button)
3. MS Config Utility opens
4. Click on the startup tab (far right)
5. You are on the page of "startup items"
6. The only items that you need are
a. ScanRegistry
b. TaskMonitor
c. System Tray
d. LoadPower Profile
e. Antivirus
f. If any others i-- you recognize you can uncheck -- if you do not recognize them Google, Yahoo search, etc. to see if they are needed.

steps 1-5 are how to there. Step 6 is how to stop these items from loading. IF IN DOUBT - DO NOT CHECKOFF -

most of the these programs start up at windows as a feature for convienence. If too many open at windows startup, then yes, things can get very cluttered.

First, find out which programs are starting up and make a little list. Most of them will appear on the task bar (bottom right)

Open these programs up, open up their options, preferences, or tools menus (depending on the program) and find the option that says (Start when Windows Starts) and disable it.

Most of the programs that have this feature are instant messengers, internet browsers, music programs, shareware, and security software. (Norton Internet Security, AIM, Limewire, Steam, Quicktime)

I do however recommend tha you let security softwares (McAfee, Norton, etc...) run at windows startup as they do need to be running from computer boot to shutdown.

Either uninstall them in Control panel/Add / Remove programs or go to Start/start up and delete them from there. THIS WILL NOT UNINSTAL THE PROGRAM

Open them up, and there should be some options within there tools. And choose them not to. Or if they are in your running window back click on them , and you should have an option to stop them from auto start.

I use a good software named registry cleaner to remove unnecessary programs. You can try it too.

Search google for 'reg cleaner'. You will find it.
