The tree in my front yard came down this summer and I need to plant a new to block the sun from my house. I would like a decidious tree that is hardy. I would also like something a little different - unusual. I have alergies so please keep that in mind. We also need something that is not to sappy since we have several small kids and animals that track everything into the house.

There is nothing more beautiful that the white birch, just the borers that sometimes attacks it in the southern weather. Plant a couple of them in your front yard. They should do very well in your climate. Do not put a willow, the roots will crack your foundation and also will get into any sewer and water pipes in your yard. They are beautiful, but any fast growing tree like that tends to have a bad root system. Their is a company that sells trees---it's something like Muesser Forest's---can't remember the exact spelling, but lots of trees and info where they will live.

maple is a poor choice for your specs ( unusual not sappy ) try a variation of the Mountain Ash for cold climates ( flowers , fairly rare , grows 30-40' and small fast decomposing leaves so no raking - also very disease resistant )
