Is it:
"Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you"
or
"Do unto others as they do unto you"?
I think we all know which statement is used the most on this site by those who deem to class themselves as followers of Jesus, don't we?
(a hint; it's not the former)
It seems many prefer their own beliefs rather than those taught by the religion they choose to 'follow'...
Why does the Christian authorities seem to refrain from teaching the dangers of the Ego, resulting in the latter statement becoming truer than the former?
"Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful." (Luke 6:30-36)

Thanks, Dhyana.
Been there, done that. No intention of being deceived again by the words of Man.
My point is hypocrisy.
I know you are one of the few decent individuals who like to read between the lines though(regardless of belief), therefore I respect you.

It is definitely 'whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you,do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets". Whoever does the will of God is considered the mother & brethren of Jesus Christ and all true Christians. Not every one who says "Lord,Lord.." will enter into the kingdom of God.That is because people may SAY that they are Christians but it is only those who both hear AND do the will of God that will enter into eternal life with Him...Have no fear about those who you see professing to be Christians and are not, because even in Jesus' time they were around (scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites) but do not go and judge anyone, leave that to Jesus, who is the Judge of the Quick and the dead. Judge yourself,so that you will not be condemned with the world.God bless you all.

It never ceases to amaze me what good preachers some nonbelievers are. It's such a simple leap to come over and join us! lol! I go by, "Do unto others as I have done unto you," with Christ speaking it. Since I have a long history with Him, I'm able to pass it on to others.
In answer to your question, the Ego is not the major focus in Christianity...Love is. And when Christ's followers truly embrace and understand Love, the Ego drops away of itself...naturally.

In attempting to answer your question, I have on many occasions seen those who claim to be Christians do some way outrageous things. It would be way too easy to make a judgment on all Christians based on the actions of many. So, as is scripturally fed to me when I see this, forgive as you would want to be forgiven.
I also make note that not everyone who proclaims Chrisitianity is as developed as others. I may feel that my application of the Word is on the beginning level, whereas you may feel that your application of the Word is intermediate and so forth. Unfortunately, we are judged by our works and our walk, so when others count you among Christians and you are not being a great role model the entire fellowship suffers. That's the best answer I can provide. Enjoy your day and weekend.

O let me shed a little light
On someone's path I pray;
I'd like to be a messenger
Of happiness today!
It may be just a phone call,
A smile, or a prayer,
A long neglected letter
Would lift the edge of care.
I want to spread some happiness
In what I say or do,
Make life a little sweeter
For someone else!
Don't you?

I thank thee for exposing hypocrisy, but remember that all hath sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Christians are no exception.

This question is way too long. Anyway, in Christianity it is not the "ego" but the "understanding" and it is not the "id" but the "will."
We are warned that the will can overtake the understanding. It is in the Adam and Eve story in parables.
