From studying some history in college, I firmly believe that the 'free love' of the 1960s culture and counter-culture (which included drug-use, music, politics, etc.) is the leading factor in the demise of public standards and sociological morals. The ability to do whatever you want, whenever you want, has always seemed like a "dream" to everyone, but it led to heightened drug abuse, lack of responsibilities, promiscuous sex and pregnancies, all with the ability to pick-up and move on and not worry about anyone but yourself. Though that time has passed, the underlying mindset of that age was passed on to their children (to rebel, to stand apart, to challenge) and has since and will continue to be passed on generation to generation. The decency of society was sacrificed for the ultimate freedom of expression and living.
