The truth. Pull out some drawings of the female anatomy (from the inside..like the uterous, cervix and vaginal passage, I found some on google once when my son asked), then show him. Explain that when the baby is ready to be born, mom's body releases hormones that start labor.

Labor makes the both the uterous contract to push the baby out, and opens the cervix so it is big enough for the baby to pass through. The baby then passes through the cervix, pelvic bones and down the vaginal passage until it is out.

Truth is always your best answer, but with younger kids, you need to not be overly complex and keep your answers scaled to the question. He asked how the baby comes out. That's a lot easier on parents than how the baby got in. So answer out when that's what he asked, and prepare for the "in" question that will pop up.

By responding with comfort and truth, you will leave open the door that he will come to you when he has further questions. This gives you the opportunity to both make sure he knows what he needs to AND for you to discuss values.

In another couple of years, you WILL need to start talking about self-respect and control, as well as birth control and disease prevention. I read just yesterday a simple answer to what I believe - you teach your kids your values regarding sex, but must understand that they WILL make their own choices and those choices may or may not match your values (ie. sex before marriage). If you can accept that, but give them solid reasons that THEY can buy into for waiting, they will abstain longer and be more responsible.

This might help:

1. The baby grows inside the woman's uterus. The uterus is closed off at the bottom by the cervix.

2. When the baby is ready to come out, the uterus starts to contract, which means it is trying to push the baby out. This causes the cervix to "dialate", or slowly open.

3. The baby, with the help of its mother, is pushed out through the cervix, entering the vagina, and then leaves the vagina.

However, "vagina" may be a perfectly fine answer. One childbirth educator says: "The reason for the bare minimum is that as adults we usually tend to give far more information than the child actually required once we get started. I refer to the old joke of "Mom, where did I come from?" where the mother patiently explained the facts of conception, ending in the child saying, "Oh I was just wondering, Mike's from Connecticut." It is possible to overdo, so a good rule of thumb is let them ask the questions and don't stress too much about it."

Since the child knows about reporductive organs through health class, just be honest. Explain how your body knows when its read y hav ethe baby, your uterus starts contracting, and then you need to help push baby out throught he birth cancal. If the child already knows the names of these parts, go ahead and use them in your explanation. You may even want to bring out hte school book that he/she has learned it from and show then while you are explaining.

Remember kids are taking sex ed as early as 10 now, so he/she may even know this stuff already or will soon. It would be better to explain it yourself before you give birth so that he/she understands it all while you are in labor. I would encourage explaining the pain of it too, like it can be handled with meds or that you have to endure it to get the baby out, but its ok bc mommy is ok. Just reassure the child that its all natural!

Good luck!

The truth. The woman has contractions that feel like strong cramps hugging her belly. She pushes and the baby moves down and out through her vagina.
