My 6 year old and my 2 year old girls both have terrible pot bellies, neither girls are fat but both have this "beer belly" type look. Will they grow out of it? it's a nightmare buying them clothes.
P.s. Neither drink beer before you ask and both have a healthy balanced diet.

They will definately grow out of it. My mum said I had one and my skirt used to kinda sit under it with my vest pulled over, thats how I liked it apparantly.

Im now a healthy 26 year old whos 5" 11 and size 12.

Keep and eye on their pot bellies; And whilst I am not insinuating
that either of them are fat, you do not have to be a rocket scientist to realise that a bad diet and lack of exercise can soon turn a child into an obese teenager.

It must be a nightmare feeding youngsters these days as they will always want what their friends eat, snacks and crisps etc, It is really down to educating your children about food at an early age. But please do not become obssesive about their pot bellies, it can all be part of growing up. Ask your own mum if you had a pot belly when you were young maybe it is a family trait, and that the pot belly disappears at a certain age.

If it is really concerning you why not have a word with the nurse at your doctors surgery. I am sure she will be able to put your mind at rest and not to worry unduly.

Best wishes to you and your little ones with the pot bellies.

Gypsie - it is natural, do not be concerned!!

As other contributors have stated they have had friends or family with the same pot bellied look (my five year old is the same and my younger sister was like that till she was about 11)! I think it is really cute!

I was made to walk with books on my head when I was little so I walked a lot more upright - so my tummy was pulled in.

Unless your children tell you they have a problem - fear not!!

My 6 year old boy had a pot belly til he was 5. All of sudden he is a skinned rabbit

Just make sure they get plenty of exercise, eat (fairly) healthily and don't sit around all day and it will go. They store fat as this is the energy that helps them run around all day.

If you worried, contact your health visitor.

There is nothing wrong with them at all. It is a sign that they are "diaphragm breathers" as opposed to chest breathers.
I look the same and I am a fifty year old male. Mine is due to the same reason. Most swimmers and rowers look the same incidentally.
Diaphragm breathing is the most efficient and healthy way to breath. Most kids grow out of it.

i had it when i was little and so did my children boys and girls, now they are getting older they are skinny as little rabbits, its really common for little children to have pot bellies! stop worrying, unless you think it is a problem see the doctor, but i wouldnt keep mentioning it to them or they might start worrying about there appearance- and you know where that could lead?

Have you considered a possible wheat allergy? This is a very common reaction to wheat- I know because my stomach inflates EVERY time I eat something with even the slightest bit of wheat in it.

I'm sure the bellies will go as they grow up. Speak to your GP if it really bothers you.
