In the 7th century? I don't think many people would have been so shocked.
Mary was supposedly 12 when she was impregnated, as she gave birth at 13 (according to popular belief).
Read a book on the history of royals in medieval times and you'll see that a girl of 16 was considered an old maid, and many betrothals took place when the child was 7, 8, 9 years old.

I'm not a Muslim, But I'm SICK of seeing this distortion on the Net -- so quit perpetuating it. There is NO proof he ever had sex with her at that age. It was common to betroth young children at that time, mostly to seal political alliances. "Marriage" was a legal contract that did not necessarily involve immediate sex or any sex at all. Sometimes princes and princesses among the European CHRISTIAN royalty were betrothed AT BIRTH but nobody was having sex with newborns. Get some historical background, please!
And yes, Mary probably was around 12 and Joseph 13 -- the ages of maturity in Jewish culture, based on average physical maturity. (Remember, lifespans were very short -- a 40-year-old person was a senior already.) Nowadays 12 and 13 are the ages of bar and bat mitzvah, when children become adults in terms of particiapting in and/or leading certain Jewish liturgies. But in olden times, when a girl got her first period, she was considered an adult woman. For boys, it was when the beard and other secondary body hair started growing in. Not the way we think now, but it was considered normal back then.

You have to understand that, in Mohommad's time, such things were normal. Even after his time, most of our founding fathers had wives that they married when they were fourteen or fifteen. I'm pretty sure that many of the men in the bible had child brides, because that's just the way it was done back then. We didn't become really concerned about the age a girl should be when she got married untill about a century ago.

the world would be so much more peaceful, if people did not constantly try to incite hate.
People are so intolerant and ignorant of others faiths and yet so blind to what there own faith teaches.
Jesus said:Stop judging that you may not be judged.” (Matt. 7:1) According to Luke, Jesus added: “Stop condemning, and you will by no means be condemned. Keep on releasing, and you will be released. Practice giving, and people will give to you. They will pour into your laps a fine measure, pressed down, shaken together and overflowing.”—Luke 6:37, 38.
He also said:
3Â Why, then, do you look at the straw in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the rafter in your own eye? 4Â Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Allow me to extract the straw from your eye’; when, look! a rafter is in your own eye? 5Â Hypocrite! First extract the rafter from your own eye, and then you will see clearly how to extract the straw from your brother’s eye.
If we go back in the history of any religion, you will see the awful things done "in the name of God", however i do believe that there are TRUE worshippers of GOD out there-
“By this all will know that you are my disciples,” said Jesus, “if you have love among yourselves.” (John 13:35) Love permeated the attitudes and dealings of early Christians. So true was this that among the pagans primitive Christians were particularly known for their brotherly love. In his Apology, Tertullian cites the words of such worldlings: “‘Look,’ they say, ‘how they love one another . . . and how they are ready to die for each other.’” This same brotherly love is evident among true followers of Christ today; it serves to identify them. Before all the world, amid its turmoil and lack of love, Stop looking at the faults of others and ask yourself how YOU are doing in this respect, and how your religion in general is doing also.
If you believe someones religion is false, don't follow it, but that does not mean you need to stir up more animosity, there is enough hatred in this world already.

I know what should happen, if I was in charge. He'd soon be a eunich, buried up to his brand new wound in an ant nest. But he'd probably get a 'fair trial', spend millions of tax payers' money on solitary confinement for his own safety and appeals all the way up to the supreme court, then go to a cushy mental facility for the rest of his life where agents like Clarice Starling would pick his brain to catch other freaks and treat them the same way.

Well until mid 1800s, the legal age to marry someone right here in USA was 10, let alone what happened 1400 years ago.

He would have his compound surrounded and beseiged by the FBI and ATF, then stormed after he jerks them around for two months promising to let people go and breaking those promises, precisely with the intent of provoking an apocalyptic end to his little cult. At least, that's what happened last time.
