I have 7 cats some of them very old. Buddy (Golden Retreiver) appears to be around a year to two years old. He is very sweet. How can I train him to leave the cats alone?

Let the dog and the cats play!

Try introducing him to the cats one at a time instead of all together. Since he was a stray, you have no idea what he's been through. Give him some space & he should calm down once he knows you're going to keep him. He is probably still scared & confused. Let him get used to his new surroundings.

Sorry that some folks aren't dog people. I would start by giving him a command ("No cats!"). Sit him down (or pin him down gently) and let him know that he can't even think about your cats. I have a female Retriever who's two and she loves cats, but she chased them when she was younger. I agree with the person who said tha tthe cats would let him know who's boss. Good luck!

Protect your cats from him, especially the elderly ones!

Perhaps you have a friend that might like this dog. I wouldn't take him to the pound as someone else suggested unless absolutely desparate.

By "going after" do you mean wanting to attack? Or does he just want to play. If it appears he just wants to play, introduce him to one of your younger cats, watch them carefully, correct him if he is TOO playful, and praise him when he's gentle. Some dogs will give the kitty doggy kisses. :-)

This younger cat, if confident, will soon have your doggy friend under control. Almost invariably.

well the cats will let him know that he can't play with them. goldens learn very fast. i have 3 of them and my cat showed them that they don't want to play. but eventually they all get along now, i think it took about 1 week for them all to get used to each other. are you going to keep buddy? i wish there were more people like you that would just take the animal in their home, as long as the animal was safe, and in your case he is very safe. good luck

Be careful to protect the cats from him if he is being aggressive..especially the older ones..I wouldn't just have them all together either..introduce them one by one..keep buddy and the cats separate for at least a week if possible so they can get used to each others smell. IF nothing works i would find a good home for buddy-don't risk your cats lives or happiness...

my dog is a jack russel and we have 2 cas. 1 is 11 ans the other is 2. my dog plays with the 2 year old and he likes the attention. If it gets aggressive, start putting buddy in a backyad or a room with no cats and nothing 2 tear up.

Maybe u could say no when he comes up to the cats to close. And if he doesnt stop leave him outside for a while tied up to a tree or something then bring him in. When he does answer correct let him have a treat or give him some TLC.

Give them time to be together and after about a month they'll either get along or the cats will be too fast for him. Not to worry.

The cats will let him know that it isn't cool, but you might want to give him some consequences. If he starts to chase one, grab his collar and make him go outside for five minutes, then try again. Eventually they all adapt to eachother. When he does start behaving himself, praise him so he starts to understand what is acceptable and what isn't. Good luck!

R ur cats indoor or out door??? i suggest, if they r not going to get on, but u still want to keep him that you only allow him into part of your house, get him an outdoor kennel and mabe a small run, for the safety of your cats

But lol i think Ur cats are more likely to hurt him if he comes near.......he will eventually learn...
