I have found someone I really like. We have tons in common, and we both enjoy spending time together. I am sure that he really likes me. I really like him, too. We work very well together! But in the afternoon, he starts drinking beer which is o.k. because he really is responsible with it. Then, he also "smokes" with some of his friends. He does it at home and is really responsible with it also. He does not act crazy or stumble around. We have wonderful conversations and enjoy the evening. My concern is : will the drinking get worse, will the smoking get worse? Will this lifestyle eventually lead me to drink alot and smoke, too? Will I be good for him and make his life better? He is 43 and I am 42. We have both been divorced once, and we were lonely and now seem to really cherish each others company.I don't know much about the pot smoking. Could it or does it make people untrustworthy. So far I haven't seen any evidence of unfaithfulness.

Second hand smoke could endanger both of your lives and the drinking may or may not get worse, you will just have to trust him on that, Try to talk to him, tell him you care about him and you want him to be around for as long as possible, and trying to become healthier would make you forever happy. Try to get him to quit both, or at least one, or one at a time. Good Luck :)

Honestly this guy sounds like a loser considering that he has to resort to smoking pot and drinking all the time.

There is nothing responsible about smoking pot, it is illegial.
Consider this, what if you have kids and the cops find out about the pot, what do you think will happen. JAIL! I do not believe that is what you are wanting.

I would leave that one alone as just friends or just friends with benifits. :-)

But do not put urself in a situation that can really lead to trouble and yes I feel if you start to get around it more then it will lead to you starting this bad habbit.

I don't know if the drinking and smoking will get worse. But maybe you should try spending more time together and try to get rid of his bad habits by entertainning him in any ways so that he could forget about it.
But honestly, there is no real solution on how to stop these vices and also, we don't want to push people to stop doing bad habits. Just be there for him.

You sound perfect for each other. He has bad habits and you already make excuses for him. Any one who habitually drinks and "smokes" daily has a problem. And no he may not be unfaithful with another woman, but he will cheat on you with drugs and alcohol. There are other lonely people out there that don't have "bad" habits. Do yourself a favor and find one of them, don't settle for this one.

Do not waste your time thinking that you will change his ways. Just have the willpower to withstand pressure. Just because he drinks and smokes doesn't mean that you will end up doing the same. Just continue with your relationship as it is. Hopefully things should work out well. Good luck.

If this behavior is bothering you, talk to him about it and find out what he thinks. If you enjoy each other's company and these habits are in moderation, it shouldn't be too worrisome, but everyday is not moderation, in my opinion. If he refuses to change (even a little change is ok), then you should think hard about getting too attached to him. Good luck!
