Always check to see which horse performs the best at that distance. Check-out how the horse performs at that particular track. Make sure if the horse is coming off a lay-off, he has shown ability to run off the lay-off. Check the trainer's record, if the trainer has a poor record, I'm sure the horse will run just like it. Try not to bet cheap claiming races or maiden claiming races. ALWAYS, ALWAYS look for value ! Favorites will ruin you.

Yeah, look for the jockey and good odds first!! They are so helpful. Looks for something a bit firey, but not too out of control. You should see lots of power in the hindquarters and most successful ones have intelligent looking eyes and faces, although this isn't a very reliable factor. There is also a triangle conformation the experienced eye could look for:
"Ideal hip forms equilateral triangle from point of buttock, point of hip, and stifle. A short hip has a short femur (thigh bone) that reduces the length of quadriceps and thigh muscles. The femur is short when the stifle seems high (sits above sheath in male horse)"
You do not say if you are looking to buy a racehorse or just bet on them.
If you are looking to buy, check the parents. Usually good parents make good foals.
If you are betting at a racecourse, walk around the betting stands a little, sometimes owners will hang around and you may overhear a few tips, however, do not bet lots on a horse because you heard a tip. Also if you are listening for tips do not trust owners who guarantee their horse will win unless it is the favourite, and even then be cautious. Some race tracks allow people near the stables. Firstly, if you can easily gain access to the stable DO NOT BET. The horses may be drugged to an unfair advantage. If you can get near them but not close enough to the horses to do such thing, listen out for tips there.
IF YOU BET YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELF TO BLAME IF YOU LOSE DO NOT BLAME ANYONE ELSE EVEN IF YOU WERE TIPPED!!
If all else fails, bet on the one with the funky name or who is a different colour... I tried it a few times... and won, but lost a few times too. If you are uncertain, the best thing to do is not bet. This way you aren't risking lots of money.
If you are talking about racing on the TV, this can easily be sorted. Watch a few races just guessing in your head who you pick to win and see if you are anywhere near correct. If you are then try betting a little bit of money and work your way up... Hope this helps. Have fun.

when they last ran and at what distance....what type of race it was turf or dirt, the finish of the last race is a good starting point....also see if its the 1st race will blinkers or lasex--that usually gives a great improvement for a race or 2.
and don't forget the jockey--a great jockey can get all the horse can give whereas a poor jockey might not get the horse's best effort!
