I doubt He'll say, "Oh, Hell." Do you really believe God uses such language?

The word "hell" has caused more misunderstanding of scripture than almost any other. The English word is translated from four words in the original text, one in Hebrew and three in Greek. Let's look at them.

Heb. sheol: literal meaning, "the pit". Generally used to refer to "the grave", the state of being dead. Translated about fifty per cent of the time as "hell" and about fifty per cent as "the grave", typically whenever the text said things about sheol that could not possibly make sense in the traditional beliefs about "hell." Selective translation anyone?

Of the words used in Greek, one is "hades". Now this is the word for the place of the dead in Greek mythology. It is governed by Hades, the god of the dead. Are we to believe that the God of Israel, the one true God, the only wise God actually endorses Greek mythology. Then which of the Greek gods does he actually approve? The question is ridiculous.

The second word, "tartaroo", doesn't really come into the question. It is used only once; it means "to send to Tartarus" and is translated as, "to cast down to Hell." The same considerations apply here as in the previous case, since Tartarus was a specific region of Hades where great sinners were tormented. I doubt God meant to suggest we should embrace Greek myth as literal truth and a spiritual guide.

The final word, "Gehenna", is the first that has an actual, literal meaning. It is a Greek form of an Aramaic expression, "ge hinnom", meaning "the valley of HInnom." This is definitely a real place. It is a valley that lay outside the walls of ancient Jerusalem to the south. The residents of the city used to take their garbage out there to be burned.

So, there is a literal hell. It is still there. I had a correspondent in Jerusalem who told me that in the summer, their annual film festival is held in the valley of Hinnom, also known as "the valley of the sons of Hinnom." It seems that ministers all over the world should be preaching something along the lines of "repent or you will be sent to the south Jerusalem landfill."

There may be those who see fit to take that literally. So far as I am concerned, however, I find the notion ridiculous. Which is what happens whenever we look into scripture and try to interpret language obviously figurative in a literal sense. The literal words will not support such a distortion regardless of how cleverly the interpreter twists and wriggles to try to make sense of it.

I hope this is helpful.

Respectfully submitted,

I think if there is a god, he's certainly not the petty narcissitic tyrant of Christianity or Islam.

If there is a creator, the only insight we have into his nature is his creation. The universe is rational. So if there is a creator of it, the best guess is he's rational too, which is why he created a rational universe.

A rational being who created a rational universe and then provided no evidence of his existence, clearly either doesn't care whether we believe in him, or actually wants us not to.

So if I come face to face with this rational being after death, I have no reason to suspect there will be any consequence for having rejected the man made concepts about him that evolved from sun worship.

If you reject God you will never get into heaven...
So I think you would be the one saying "Oh Hell!!!!"
It is not God's wish for anyone to go to hell.. however we all have free will.. So if you reject God & don't place your faith trust & life in Jesus.. so your sins will be forgiven.. Well then hell it shall be.
God Bless & hope you will not be saying oh hell.

If you reject God, you put yourself in a very awkward situation. Because God will always try to reach you, but there will come a time when He may stop, because of your stubbornness. Only one person loses when they reject God, and it is not God, it is you. god doesn't throw you away, you walk away under your own volition, but must bear the responsibility and the consequences that follow.

I think He would give you some clues, like He usually does that He's concern, and that He is there for you. If you only truly new how He feels, God is not only strong, but sensitive too. His feelings are more than we have, His love is greater than ours, His hurt is greater too. God don't reject, He has patience.

When rejecting God, you are choosing the devil....

Acts 26:18 "to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me."

John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies."
