I find this incredibly frustrating but dont know how best to stop them. Simply asking is not good enough.

Start talking to them like they are talking to you.

guy on phone "yeah, so you wanna have dinner tonight?"
you "Ewwww! NO! Are you kidding me?"
guy gives you a funny look.
guy " so how's 7? At the Clapping Toad? Yeah I love their nachos!"
you "Yeah, they are good..... you are a persist ant little devil, aren't you?"
guy "oh wait, I have to pick up my kid from softball then, is 7:30 OK?"
you "oh wow! you have a kid? I have a cactus. I named him Hector, after my father"
guy says to you "look buddy, I don't give a **** about your cactus!"
you to the rest of the bus, in a loud voice "NO! I will not reach in your pocket and play with your balls! You sicko! Does your girlfriend know you cut big holes in your pocket? The nerve"

That should help

Why is it frustrating? If two people were sitting next to each other talking would you tell them to shut up also? What is the difference just because you cannot hear the other side of the conversation? Are you frustrated because you are a snoop and want to know it all? Now if they were in a theatre that is a different story but Public transportation?? Come on that is just silly. (unless it is the driver in wich case you can call the police on them )

Get a car or grow tougher skin. Honestly if you can't handle something minor like someone talking on a phone you probably should'nt be allowed into public. I would recommend thinking of how much others have to suffer or learn to medidtate in extreem situaltions. It is very nice to just rise above everything or let the whole world melt away and crawl back inside yourself to find the inner nothingness.

Personally I would not recommend trying to shut them up because in this day and age u never know what kind of psycho is on the bus with u. U could end up being attacked or something cuz people are really nuts out there in public (not much social services to help mentally ill)

If, instead of talking on the phone, they were talking to the person next to them, would you be so annoyed? Or is it because you can't overhear the whole conversation? Or is it because they are too loud (common on cell phones).

If it's a volume issue, asking them to speak softer is polite, and most will comply. Simply state that you have tinnitus and the noise gives you migraines.

If you're just nosy, then why should they stop speaking?

Since it is only a transport, you probably cannot get them to turn off their phones. People will be there for just a temporary time, and many are talking to businesses.

In a public place where people will be staying and eating or visiting, you should certainly let someone know if they are too loud.

I think there has to be a shift in society; talking loud on your cell phone has to become as unacceptable as spitting on the sidewalk. People need to make as much noise about loud cell phone talkers as they can. Write your congressman. Write the newspapers. Get the word out. They will start to get a conscience about it. It would be cool if everyone on the train/bus/airport would make throat clearing noises until the person stopped. Just one experience like that would make a person lower their voice next time.

I wish there were something that can be done. Sometimes I will write down all the personal information I learned about them during thier conversation and give it to them as they get off the bus. I've seen some real paniced looks when they realize what's on the paper.

Try singing or talking very loud. I can't believe how rude people are in public. Like we want to hear their whole conversation. Oh, start making remarks about what they are talking about, join in the conversation. That may work! Best of Luck

Air horn.

Or do what I did. I opened up my phone, and started talking into it, loudly. "HEY! I'M JUST ON THE TRAIN BELLOWING INTO MY CELLPHONE AS IF YOU WERE DEAF AND I'M A JACKASS! WHAT? NO! NONE OF THE OTHER COMMUTERS MIND! AND EVEN IF THEY DID, WHO CARES?"

All of it said while never breaking eye contact with the offending party. My fellow commuters were amused. I had no worries about a physical confrontation, because a whole train car full of people had my back.

Courtesy won, and the idiot got the message, at least that time.
