I call a vacuum a vacuum, and a soda a soda and I was born and raised in Speedway, Indiana!!!!! If you heard soda called Pop, you were either living on the East Side of Indy or Just west of Downtown. But I know what you mean, I was a server when i lived there and people would just order a "pop". WTH!! lol.

I call a vacuum cleaner a vacuum cleaner. A vacuum is a place with no air in it.
I call soda pop, pop. I grew up in the Midwest, and that is the standard there.
I also call the thing that I wheel around a grocery store a cart; in many places it is a basket and in others a buggy.
My dad had a great talent. He could tell very accurately where in the United States people were from by getting them to say dozen or so words. The three above were some of those words. Gigi has given a couple of others. The only time I knew him to be wrong was with people who traveled a lot when they were growing up.
May God bless and keep you.

I call the vacuum the vacuum, and I call pop pop. :) I'm from the south originally (where people call everything Coke, no matter what kind of pop it is you're drinking, lol) but I lived in Ohio and Michigan for several years, and got used to calling it pop. I've recently moved back to the south, and when I ask for a pop, people look at me like I have a third arm or something. :D

It's a vacuum but my husband calls it a vacuum sweeper, and my grandma calls it a sweeper. So I guess it's a generational thing. And it's POP where I'm from in Michigan. But since we live in Texas now they call it coke. What kind of coke do y'all want? That's weird because to me coke is Coca-cola not any kind of beverage with carbonation. I'm learning though because if I say pop some people have no idea what I'm talking about.

Here in Michigan, a Soda is a Pop. It's that way in the entire state, and the area's of other states that are close to us. Almost no other state uses that term.
Myself, however, I got into the habit of calling it Soda when I was in HS. I cheered with a girl who moved here from Maine, and called it Soda.
My father in law loves telling us about how it's called Coke down south. A pepsi is a coke. A Mt. Dew is a Coke. You actually order it with, "I'd like a Mt. Dew Coke, please." or some such rot. Threw him for a loop when he first moved south.

A vacuum's a vacuum to me,
anything fizzy from a can or bottle is a coke.
In addition, a fold-out couch is a davenport,
and any margarine or other butter substitute is oleo.
When I was in Indiana coke was pop,
and those chocolate cookies with the icing in the middle were
called hydrox, not oreos.
In New Zealand jell-o is called jelly, jelly is called jam, and jam is called preserves. what a pain.

Vacuum is a vacuum but everything soda-esque is Coke. My daughter makes fun of me if I say pop or soda.
