i want to write him a letter to tell him but i don't know what to put in it.

Don't write him a letter, that's the coward way out. Sit down & talk to him face to face...be honest, but as gentle as you can be.

Don't write a letter, not only is it more cowardly but also, if he's feeling down he will read it over and over and it will only hurt him worse.
Let him know exactly how you feel, including that you no longer love him, if you are positive that you really feel that way and it's not something (like another guy) that is making you question your feelings. If you are positive you don't want to ever be with him again, let him know that it is not a reflection of how he is as a person, but you have come to terms with the fact that you two aren't meant to be together. It's going to hurt him if you tell him that you no longer love him, but honestly it's the best for him. He will realize that it is over and won't hang onto any sliver of hope.
Try not to repeatedly say "I'm sorry" it only makes it look like you're not 100% sure of your decision. Stand firm and don't let him try to negotiate things.
Also, make it quick. If he has a temper, do it in a public place for your safety. If you want to remain friends afterwards, realize that it will take time and give him space.

There are two ways to approach this...
Friends afterwards:
If you want to remain in some sort of friendship you need to just be honest and upfront with him, prolonging something that is going to happened some time or another is just terrible. You have to just nip it in the butt and let him know that you don't have the same feelings anymore.
Not friends afterwards:
If you don't really want to be friends anymore you need to end it in a mean way, otherways he will think maybe you just need some space and he will probably try to get back with you at a later time and if thats not what you have you need to let him know that. Don't cheat on him or anything, just tell him something that he does that annoys you, get in a small arguement and end it. This is alot easier because in the heat of the argument he might have the same feelings of wanting to break up with you at the same time you want to, then when he wants to get back with you it will be easier for you to tell him its over because by then it will be.

Dear Mac, there are a million stars in the sky and I am not yours. I am not feelin yo love. I am not askin for you to change beacause i ahve been cheating on you with the king. Molly seems interested in you if your on the rebound u sligh hunter you.

Oh come on don't take the "Dear John" way out. Tell him face to face. I did that once and really regretted it. Next time you get together tell him the truth.

write the letter as a way to brainstorm how you feel but don't actually give it to him, that's insulting. get your thoughts together in that letter that way you can see what you want to say and it will be easier to talk to him.

You walk up to him, open your mouth and let the words come tumbling out. If you can't say it to his face you are a coward and definitely not worthy of any ones attention. I personally would not have respect for you at all.

look girl if you want my advice just tell him :
We need to talk......I dont think this is working out..... i have fallen out of love with you.....(make him feel like its killing you to live that lie anymore make him feel as if it wasnt his fault) people change and something they grow apart.....here and now is where we part
