Can someone please tell me what are honor classes, and what are APs? Are honors those that you get 4.5 GPA instead of 4.0 if you get an A? And what are APs then?

Honors (H) and advanced placement (AP) courses provide an opportunity for students to pursue a more rigorous course of study. The philosophy is to encourage students to extend themselves by taking the most rigorous courses that they can succeed in. Eligibility for honors and advanced placement courses includes a strong passion for the course content and previous evidence of exemplary work in the subject matter.

AP courses, which follow a college-level course of study, prepare students to take an exam sponsored by the College Board. Many colleges and universities grant college credit for courses taken in high school if the student passes the exam. However, it is important to note that individual colleges and universities determine their own policies for granting college credits for AP classes.

GPA points: 1 extra grade point is usually given for an AP class and .5 for Honors. Unfortunately, there is no consistency in terms of how colleges calculate GPAs, assign “honors” credit, or at what grade levels they will assign that credit. Furthermore, the Cal Grant Program does not even use weighted grades in determining eligibility for its financial awards. Notwithstanding, we do know that colleges and universities want to see students stretch themselves by taking the most rigorous curriculum they are capable of. This is clearly the best predictor of future success in college! Thus, the primary reasons a student should take an honors or Advanced Placement (AP) course would be to learn more - and to stretch themselves, and get better high school GPA!

Here's another way to explain it:

Advanced Placement Weighted Grade Scale:

A=5.0 B=4.0 C=3.0 D=2.0 F=0

The AP GPA is used for in-house honors and reporting for requesting colleges. If reported on the transcript, it is identified as Weighted GPA and rank. Both the 4.0 GPA and AP GPA may be written on the transcript. If only one GPA/Rank appears, it is based on a 4.0 scale.

Honours is just a classification system. In accordance with the GPA. Like you said right, 4.5 GPA mean you probably will get a first class honours.

How the GPA is calculated is by attaching the grade point to your raw score. So if you got an A+ you get 4.5 points for that subject. In the end all the points are totalled and averages.

AP on the other hand means acedamic Points. Each subject you take has a number a Ap attached which are awarded as long as you complete and pass the subject. Most degree programs require you to accumulate a number of AP(100plus) throughout the 3 or 4 yrs. Whether you complete the degree program depends on if you manage to accumulate the required the AP for the course. What honours classification you get depends on you GPA on all the subjects taken.

AP courses are advanced placement courses that are taught in one year. They can sometimes qualify as honors classes. Honors classes are usually classes where you are taught a whole grade level above what you currently are.The classes where you get 4.5 GPA may be honors classes as well because your school weights them so that getting an A is worth more.
