Well, first of all, my mom doesn't even like me going walk the dogs and fails to understand that a dog must be walked every day... I go walk anyway, though... I go in the mornings before 9 am, and in afternoons between 6 and 7 pm. (20 mins ea.)And I let them play together in the house for a while after the evening walk. My mom walks with me in the afternoons and the kids aren't out in the morning b/c they go to school. I'm homeschooled... I can't walk in the middle of the day b/c this is Louisiana... South LA, and it's way scorching over here all the time.... My mom doesn't know how much longer she can walk with me and doesn't want me to walk alone. (I'm 15, btw) That's b/c my friend who was walking the dogs with me got beat up by some biotch.... And even though no one has EVER messed with me, except a bit of ignorant teasing, in the 2 years I've lived here, my mom still doesn't /like/ me to go out alone... I'll go if I want, though. She's not that strict.... At least not /yet/... -_-

And it's dangerous around her... Someone got killed a while back before we moved here 2 years ago! It's mostly colored people and most of the parents let the kids run the streets. Even 2 year olds in diapers... alone.... I'm not prejudice ro anything, I'm just sayin' the majority are colored....

Anyway, sorry I had to ramble on about that... But does anyone know what other kind of things I can do for my black lab and husky/chow mix so they're not bored all day? The lab stays in the kennel and my husky mix stays inside.... They're male and female. That's why. And my husky mix is getting altered soon.... So um... any ideas?

Yeah, my mom was willing to buy a treadmill only /if/ I don't go walk anymore. But like I told her, a treadmill isn't a replacement for walking outside and exploring....

Well, my mom was gonna get me some mace, but she knows a cop who stays at her work place and also my uncle's a cop and they said that it's a lawsuit waiting to happen b/c if, for some reason, I get out of hand with it and spray it in a little kids eyes, then we'd be fu.cked.... I don't why she thinks I'm gonna do that, but go firgure... And also b/c the kids can gang up together and say that /I/ sprayed them with mace first and they didn't do anything....

Its tough to keep dogs that big "entertained" without going outdoors. But ideas for outside would be play fetch with them, anything they like to go after...frisbees, baseballs...just make sure afterward you have lots of fresh water ready for them.

Hi, From my personal experience with dogs I would recommend tossing a tennis ball in your yard for your dogs to play fetch. In the house you can roll the ball across the longest area of floor space for them to play fetch.( on the carpet if possible so they don't slide or fall) The more enthusiastic you are and praise you give will encourage them to try harder. If you have a treadmill, a dog can be trained to walk on it ..start it slowly since once frightened by it they may not want to try it again. Get one of those knotted rope toys at the pet store and play tug of war with them..CAUTION only pull your end of the rope toy towards you, don't jerk the toy from side to side/left to right as this may cause some neck injury. I hope that you can get the one dog out of the kennel soon.. that is a sad plight for any animal. You are very correct in your thinking that a dog must be walked daily..to maintain their bowel and bladder control, keep them healthy with good muscle tone and to increase your bond with them. But your own safety is also important and at 15 you should not be defiant or disobey your Mother. Do as she asks and then be creative to find other ways that will solve your problem. example: Since your Mother doesn't want you to walk a distance from your home, just walk back and forth in front of your home where your Mother can see you. Do this numerous times for 20 minutes, the dogs will not care they just want to be outside with you. Don't forget your plastic bag to clean up any poo...ha ha
Go to www.srdogs.com they have a section about excercising the older dog with more ideas for in house exercise, even if your dogs are not old the ideas will still work.

Are you allowed in your yard? If so get a 25 foot lead and take your dog into the yard toss a ball or frisbee for it to fetch. Get a hulahoop and teach the dog to jump through the hoop, teach it other tricks. You got an upstairs or basement? Teach the dog to 'race' up and down the stairs. A long hallway? Race. Teaching tricks keeps the dogs mind occupied so it doesn't get bored. Use your imagination!
BTW, if those dogs are not spayed/neutered please have it done. Research health benefits to spay/neuter and also pet overpopulation.

That is really hard. A tredmeal will work that way you don't need to take them out every day and walk them. Maby you could get a tredmeal and go for walk on the weekend or something like that??

I know your mom just wants your safty my mom is one of those really protectve parents. She still is kinda but she is not as bad any more because she knows I'm old enough to do what I want.

Throw a ball or a Frisbee. Play tug with a rope. Set up an agility course in your yard. Take them to the beach.

Carry a can of pepper spray with you to make your mom feel better.

My suggestion would be to buy some tennis balls and play ball in the back yard with your dogs. This is great exercise and it is a good way to teach them to fetch if they don't already know how! My dogs also love frisbe! Good Luck and I think I agree with your mother - it isn't safe for you to walk by yourself!

After the dog has been "altered" you might try fencing in all or a portion of the back yard and let them run!
