There was a doctor on Richard and Judy awhile ago dispersing common myths and old wives tales. He said that swallowing gum was not dangerous AT ALL and would digest just the same as any other food and just as quickly. He said if it did cause any type of ill effects it would not be readily available. He explained that the myth probably arose by parents wanting children to chew gum and not just swallow as you would a sweet, so by telling them it would stick in your stomach they become scared of swallowing it and so chew it longer. He also mentioned the choking hazard of swallowing being a factor in getting kids not to swallow gum.

We were all told that and it was good advice.
Chewing gum is gum therefore cannot be digested by your stomach, it simply stay in your stomach until it works it's way out through your intestines etc. People do say ti can stick to internal organs and cause damage but I've never actually heard of it happening. Just don't swallow it, it's certainly not good for you.

Absolutely NOTHING harmful or dangerous about it AT ALL. Just a bunch of hogwash. It does NOT stay in your system, it does NOT take "years" to digest -- it passes out of your body in about 2 days, SAME AS ANYTHING ELSE.
Far better to swallow the gum, than to spit it onto the ground (like so many MORONS do) where it gets stuck to your shoes!!

There is a TV programme in the UK called Brainiac. They got someone to eat chewing gum, then monitored its progress through a guys body. It turns out that it passes through the body just like any other food.

Gum will just pass through your system (it cannot be digested), unless you have swallowed an awful lot; this can sometimes cause blockages but it's pretty rare

Well I guess if it was harmful or took nearly as long to digest as some of the people above suggest - Our government's would ban it or at least have insist on warning labels.Oh - And someone would have been sued by now!
