Melatonin (1-3 mg) has been helpful. A good multivitamin and 2-3 calcium-magnesium-zinc tablets taken daily with meals may help. Selenium 100-200 mcg has been useful if persons are deficient in this mineral. Valerian is a commonly used herbal sleep aid. All health food stores carry herbal or homeopathic 'nervines' which may help.

It's not considered to be 'natural' but I use Tylenol p.m. when I want to sleep soundly. Two of them about twenty minutes before bed help me do just that.
I've tried warm milk and that works sometimes, but not nearly as well. Also tried many other remedies, but none of them were very reliable for me. I have this problem a lot, and Tylenol is the only thing so far that seems to work about 99% of the time.

When I'm having trouble sleeping, I have a variety of things that help. Sometimes I'll only use 1 of them, sometimes several, sometimes all together.
1 A ripe banana before bedtime. Helps boost seratonin level = more relaxed, happy etc.
2 Warm, sweetened milk with a dusting of cinnamon and nutmeg. The body seems to divert blood from brain etc in order to digest the milk.
3 Sex. Alone or not, having an orgasm releases endorphins - similar to morphine - that are natural hypnotics that is, they send you to sleep.

Unisom (doxylamine succinate) works pretty well at keeping me asleep through the night. Problem is I wake up groggy and it takes a while to get the old motor running. For herbal remedies, you may want to try melatonin, Valerian root (with hops is OK too), and/or Holy Basil extract. You can find them all at Vitamin World.

Get Melatonin which is an over the counter natural sleep supplement. It stimulates the Pineal gland in the brain to produce Serotonin which initiates sleep in the body. I have used it successfully however you may experience one drawback or side effect and that being having very strange, erotic/and/or wild vivid dreams that you will actually remember when you wake up. That happened to me but I did get sleep and the dreams I had were very "interesting" to boot.

One thing that worked for me one time was setting a certain time that I was going to make myself go to bed & then I popped one of those nature sounds CDs into my stereo & just put it on constant repeat. The stereo could hold 3 CDs & there just happened to be 3 in the set....they included sounds like a stream in the woods, a rainstorm, the rainforest, dolphins, whales, & the ocean when it hits the beach. I slept gooooooooood that night!

If you're over 21, a glass of wine before bed. Also a water pillow works great along with a fan for "white noise".

To indirectly answer your question, I can tell you what NOT to take. UNISOM. Helped me fall asleep but when I woke up I was so groggy for about 4 hours after waking up. Try benadryl it helps.
