The Christians will now tell you that you were never really saved.
Welcome to YA. :)
They tell me the same thing, every time I mention my baptism, and 15 years in the Baptist church...

I can very well believe that you WERE fed a load of C--p. But please do not blame God for this. It is the religion that is at fault. Search and find out exactly what the Bible says and you will be surprised. Example. Trinity[?] The word is not even in the Bible. Truth. There is only ONE Almighty God, and he has a personal name. Exodus 6;3.
Jesus is his ONLY son, and always directed prayer to his Father, Almighty God.
So then, Mary is NOT the 'mother of God'
but just Jesus' respected mother.
Mary is NOT a channel to Jesus or God. The Bibl;e says nothing about it.
Almighty God can only be prayed to...THROUGH Jesus.
God sent Jesus. Mark 9;37
Jesus had a very long pre-human existence in heaven. Proverbs 8;22-31. There is much much more.
Were you taught this??? I doubt it.

I have to disagree with Marlee. I am a devout catholic but i have many of my own views about the Da Vinci Code and the Bible etc. You can be a free thinker and be thiest.
And yes you could be more public shout it through the streets of New York London and through the streets of Dublin Viva la Ireland
And it may be crap to you but its gold for others so be a bit more respectful

Welcome to the hardest part of life. Remember that being an atheist is not an excuse to live your life however you feel -- it is now even more important for you to live the moral and righteous life because now you realize your fate is in your own hands, that you must figure out the rules of this game we call life.
Remember that most of the moral teachings of most religions are pretty good guidelines, so don't throw them out with the religion. It is silly to throw the wheat away for the sake of the chaff.
It is now your duty and obligation as a free thinker to keep well informed on a variety of subjects. This doesn't mean be a know it all -- no one can know it all, and no one will. In what you find interest, develop a deep and thorough understanding. In what you find of non-interest, culture an awareness.
Also, look up a poem by Max Ehrmann called "Desiderata". I believe this to be one of the most powerful texts in the word. Were I to believe anything to be 'holy', this would be my 'holy text' for its simplicity of statement and depths of its truths.
May you find the peace and joy you are seeking on your new path in life.

I was raised Catholic too.(made it to Head Altar Boy too)
Left the church at 16.
Went into the World, about died, trying to Live (the World's way).
Then called out on GOD and got SAVED (all by maself).
Found out that GOD was REAL, started getting Healed.
Later, got mad thinking about it, and wanted to walk down the middle of that church with a BIBLE in my hand and yell out "Can't you Read?" (didn't do it, but wanted to).
I had never Known LOVE (GOD) Existed like that.
I had never come to Know GOD in that church.
Not saying other's don't get saved there, I Didn't.
Not prying or meddling, but if you have Never been Born-Again, you can't really renounce GOD yet.
You have to Know HIM first THEN walk away from HIM. It's called the UNPARDONABLE SIN, very few Commit this Sin, Adam did it, Baby Christian's cannot even commit it. You have to Learn alot and go up High in the Spiritual Realm to even be Able to commit it.
The Unpardonable Sin is Walking away from JESUS on PURPOSE AFTER you have Known HIM in Great Depth's of Holiness.
Hope this helps.

Good for you. Don't that that guilt business linger with you. Get it out of your system. Nobody needs to be controlled or bullied into believing things are not good for society. If there is a judgment day, I would like to know what the pope and the cardinals & bishops will say to god when they are asked to give account for how they have not done more to save Africa from AIDS. But that's just a bunch of poor black people, so why would they care, anyway? Same with the priests who diddle little boys and then pretend to be so holy and tell others how to live their lives.
Celebrate your freedom!

i love how a lot of atheists refer to other atheists as 'free thinkers.'
it's like you joined a club and now you get a pat on the back because you are no longer a 'drone' that believes in god. isn't it a little self-indulgent to be with a group of people that all think the same thing and then congratulate each other because you all believe the same thing? i actually heard a guy refer to his atheism as his religion! grow up! if you believe something, fine! but stop trying to make other people look like fools for having beliefs, it makes you look like a closed-minded idiot!
oh, yeah, and denouncing the church on this thing isn't public at all. sure a lot of people will read it, but you are faceless. you want to go for guts and glory? denounce it to the church you were baptized at, or your family, or stand on a soap box in the center of town, but if this is all the guts you have then it doesn't look much like you are committed to your statement.

you can renounce but mind you, life is a journey. It's up and down. At times, we feel and think one and there are times when we feel, think and do other.
It is a natural thing. But conscience and the wonderful and awkward things you see will remind you again and again of that supernatural stuffs.
I think I have been there in a similar way but I'm thankful that I have so many promises ahead of me

We are strangers to you here. If you feel the need to do it publicly I would think you would need to make your announcement to people who know you or make a difference in your life. My thinking is that religion is a private thing, between me and whatever I believe. But I respect your beliefs and your thinking.
Best of luck to you.

Why do you have to do it publicly in an anonymous forum? Your belief in a god is between you and god (or not).
Believe whatever makes you happiest inside and don't worry about what the rest of us think.

For most people, this type of "renouncement" is nothing more than a self-given green light to engage in selfish and immoral behavior, free of consequences or guilt.
It has nothing to do with theology or objective belief. It's all about giving oneself a permission slip to do whatever they want, without having to answer to God or anybody else.
Well, believing that God doesn't exist doesn't make it true.
