I believe she started catering. Then she made television appearances; and she made a TV special about Thanksgiving and Christmas feasting. She got into talking about making a regular show; some one asked who's going to own the show-production company, and bob's your uncle she was on the way to millions.
(Along the way she worked as a stock broker sales rep, and other day jobs.)

She had a catering business. She also made quite a fortune in the stock business.......as a broker I believe. You can read about her life here.....

Her " first" business was catering. I am assuming she expanded those dollars into the "Martha" she became.
