What would I do if I ate my purse, is that your question?

I'd not be hungry anymore, that's for sure.

Well, I'd never go anywhere without my purse, and would never order something I couldn't afford. However, if this were to happen to me, I'd do the same thing at a fancy restaurant that I'd do at a dive. I'd speak to the manager, explain my situation, leave my contact information with the manager, go straight home and get my money, promptly return and pay for the meal.

So what would I do if I finished eating my purse by myself at a first class (what?) restaurant?

Then I guess the restaurant wasn't that "first class", since they have purses on the menu...

Be absolutely mortified, I think I would cry of embarrassment too, after I had calmed down I would ask politely if I could phone a relative or friend to bring me some money, hopefully they would allow me to do that, if not I would be on my knees begging them to take my jewellery as a promise I would return with the money and failing that offer to wash up.

I am ashamed to say i have! I took my son and his g/f for a slap up meal, food was gorgeous, wine terrific and then i asked for the bill (As you do), looked at it and opened my handbag ... Now i keep my money with my cards in a large purse (Used to) and you can imagine my face when i realised i didn't have it! I'd changed my handbag before going out ... Forgot to stick my big purse in. I felt mortified, didn't want to tell my son in front of his g/f, then i knew i had to do something so i told them i was going to go to the toilets (Anything to get time on my own to think) But she took a call on her mobile. My son asked me if i was OK, saidf i looked grey ... So i whispered my sad story to him. He joked about telling me to own up to the maitre D and wash up for a week or so then got his Visa out and paid for the meal. I paid him back the moment we got home but was still red faced about it!!!

If you finished eating your purse how could you forget it? Frankly, if you had to eat your purse I don't think that restaurant is quite as "first class" as you seem to think.

I never go anywhere without my purse, and if I did, I certainly would have noticed it long before I ordered my meal that I couldn't pay for.

Probably call the Manager discreetly over and explain. Then call home or someone that could access my card # and phone in the info to get it charged to my account asap.

I would call someone and have them bring my purse to the restaurant. If that didn't work,I would explain my situation to the manager and ask if I could bring it back to them.
